Members of track team qualify for region

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County’s Jamal Hayes breezed through the 200 meters and 400 meters on Thursday to advance to the finals of the Region 1-AAAAA track meet.

The Packers will attempt to win their second straight region championship when the finals are held Tuesday.

Thursday’s prelims were held at Lowndes High.

A high school All-American in the 200, Hayes ran a 21.4 in the event to place first. He blazed to a 48.8 in the 400 meters to take first in that event as well.

Hayes, who has verbally committed to a track scholarship from LSU, also was first in the long jump with an effort of 22 feet, 4 inches.

He also was on 4×400 and 4×100 relay teams that qualified for finals.

The 4×400, which placed first with a 3:28, also included Terry McDaniel, Channing Hudson and Jacolby King.

The 4×100 team, also first with a 41.97, included Hayes, B.J. Howard, Vance Cuff and Orion Ponder.

Colquitt County had two other relay teams that qualified for the finals.

The other 4×100 team of McDaniel, Mitchell Thompson, Justin Walker and Kelvin Watts placed fourth with a 44.1.

The second 4×400 team of Dominique Hunt, Kenny Gee, Dannie Hunt and Reggie Bell was second with a 3:42.

James Trimble placed first in both the discus and shot put on Thursday.

Trimble’s discus throw was 151 feet, 5 inches. His shot put was 46 feet, 7 inches.

Cuff was first in the 100 with a 10.6. He was followed by Watts, who had an 11.1.

Cuff also was third in the high jump, jumping 6 feet.

Ponder was second in the triple jump, turning in 44 feet, 7 inches. He also was fourth in the 200 meter with a 23.4.

In the 1,600 meters, Joseph Flowers turned in a personal best 5:22 to finish sixth.

Joe Peacock was second in the 800 meter with a 2:10.

The Packers’ Vandy McBride was second in both the 110 and 300 intermediate hurdles events.
