Colquitt County swim team ninth in Bainbridge

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High swimming team placed ninth in the third annual Bearcat Bash meet held Saturday at the Bainbridge YMCA.

Colquitt County had 21 swimmers take part in the event, which was won by the host team Bainbridge High and Columbus High, both of which had 161 points.

Lee County was third, followed by Cairo, Westover, Thomasville, Americus-Sumter County, Thomas County Central, Colquitt County, Troup County and Monroe.

Caroline Rogers turned in the best finish for Colquitt County, placing third in the girls 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:50.37.

A freshman, Rogers also was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:25.44.

She also was on the 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished sixth. Becky Beason, Amy Peek and Kristen Robinson swam the other three legs.

Ashlee Paramore was sixth in the girls 100-yard backstroke with a 1:31.22. Robinson was seventh; Beason, eighth; and Katy Weilbrenner was 10th in the event.

Other top-10 finishes were turned in by:

• The girls 200-yard medley relay team of Paramore, Peek, Rogers and Beason, which was seventh.

• Peek, who was seventh in the 200-yard individual medley, and ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

• The 200-yard boys freestyle relay team of Carter Jones, B.J. McKellar, Taylor Walsh and Chris Phillips, which finished 10th.

• The 400-yard boys freestyle relay team of Walsh, Phillips, Jay Desselle and Caleb Meister, which was eighth.

Also swimming for Colquitt County on Saturday were Tyler Perryman, Jacob Cobb, Andrew Parker, Chris Mercer, Joe Peacock, Brandon Childers, Emily Casteel, Lindsay Hargrove and Rachel Campbell.

Colquitt County swimmers will continue to try to qualify for the Feb. 9-11 state swimming and diving meet when they travel to Fort Valley on Jan. 6. Colquitt also will travel to Athens for a meet at the Ramsey Center at the University of Georgia.
