Colquitt sweeps Lowndes in soccer
MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys soccer team had not won at Lowndes since 1999. And it had been almost as long since the Lady Packers won at Martin Stadium.
But Colquitt County pulled a big Region 1-AAAAA sweep at Lowndes on Tuesday with the girls winning 2-0 and the boys getting a pair of goals from Matt DeMott in the final 20 minutes for a 2-1 victory.
Colquitt County boys coach Randall Balch said his team’s victory “turns Region 1-AAAAA upside down.
“Twenty-one people laid it out there and made it happen,” said Balch, whose team is now 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the region. “We just kept battling back and working. We never doubted ourselves. We kept positive.
“I’m just here driving the bus and feeling good about it.”
DeMott’s winner came on an indirect kick from about 20 yards out. His first goal was from 35 yards out as the Packers battled back from a 1-0 halftime deficit.
It was the two youngest players on the team that carried the Colquitt County girls to their win.
Freshman Abbey Taylor got her first varsity goal with 26:15 let in the first half and fellow ninth-grader Alba Hernandez added an insurance goal with just 50 seconds left in the match. It was her 15th goal of the season.
In between, senior Sha Wetherington marked the Vikettes Amber Elam, holding her to just four shots and the Lady Packers got a rare victory at Lowndes.
“That was a huge, huge game for us,” said Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis. “We haven’t won down in three years or better.
“It was a big confidence-builder.”
The victory was the seventh straight for the Lady Packers, who opened with a 3-1 loss at Warner Robins, but haven’t been beaten since.
Colquitt is now 2-0 in the region.
The loss was the first in the region for the Lowndes girls, now 2-1.
Colquitt County returns to action on Friday when it travels to meet Coffee.
