Rifle teams beats Fitzgerald
MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High rifle team shot its lowest score of the season on Tuesday, but it was still good enough to knock off Fitzgerald in a key area match.
Led by Shontae Robinson’s 287, Colquitt County defeated Fitzgerald by a score of 1,133-1,116, the team’s closed match of its 7-0 season.
The team’s previous lowest score was a 1,140 shot in the season-opener back on Jan. 26.
“We were down a little bit,” said Gunnery Sgt. Emmett Bryant, the Colquitt County coach said.
The Fitzgerald range is not as well-lit as Colquitt County’s, Bryant said.
And the team is still shooting with senior Yohann Brinson, who has a cast on a broken finger on his right hand. Brinson also had a case of the hiccups as the match began, Bryant said.
The matches with Fitzgerald have traditionally been close ones.
“We always have good matches with them,” Bryant said. ‘They always seem to rise up when they shoot us.”
In addition to Robinson’s match-high 287, Colquitt County got a 285 from Victoria Dampier, a 281 from Jessica Corona and a 280 from Brinson.
Dampier had a match-high 99 in the prone position and added a 97 kneeling and an 89 in the standing position.
Robinson had a team-high 98 in the kneeling position and added a 97 in the prone and a 92 in the standing position.
Corona shot a 95 in both the prone and kneeling positions and had a 91 in the standing position. Brinson turned in a 96 in the kneeling position, a 95 in the prone position and an 89 in the standing position.
Colquitt will be home to shoot Dodge County on Thursday.
