Helms breaks 600 twice over weekend

MOULTRIE — Ryan Helms has won the last two Class AAAAA state diving championships, improving his score last year by 46 points over his 2005 winning score.

His state championship score as a freshman was 472.70. Last year, it was 518.70.

But if the Colquitt County High junior dives in the Feb. 8 state meet as he did in a pair of invitationals over the weekend, his score may not even be in the vicinity of those he put up the last two years.

Helms won the 37th Metro Atlanta Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at the Westminster Schools with a 611.60. The score shattered the pool’s previous record by 55 points.

On Saturday, at the Clarke-Oconee Invitational in Athens, it was more of the same, with Helms turning in a 610.40 to win the meet.

The current record set at a state meet is a 557.20 scored by Wes-leyan’s Webb Worthington in 2005.

The two meets were the final tune-ups for the state meet, which also will be held at the Westminster Schools.

Colquitt County will send three boys to the state meet.

Joining Helms will be Owen Blank and Jacob Russell.

Blank turned in a second-place finish on Saturday in Athens, scoring a 458.55. He was fourth on Friday in Atlanta with a 446.14.

Russell was third in Athens, posting a 446.00 on Saturday after finishing seventh with a 408.15 on Friday.

Freshman Henry Norman was also competed in both meets for Colquitt County.

Colquitt County has six outstanding girl divers, but only four can dive in the state meet.

On Saturday in Atlanta, Anna Aguero place first with a 445.85.

Ali Lepech was fourth with a 423.75; Ann Perry Blank was fifth with a 402.45; and Erin Goodman was ninth with a 322.15.

Neither Hannah Moore, the 2004 state champion, nor Kelsey Goodman competed in the meet, which drew 30 divers.

On Saturday, Kelsey Goodman placed first with a 477.95. Lepech was second with 472.00 an Aguero was third with a 469.90. Moore was fourth with a 467.35.

Blank was sixth with a 429.45 and Erin Goodman was ninth with a 347.00.
