Girls tennis team wins, goes to 2-0

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County girls tennis coach Linda Berl was concerned prior to the Lady Packers match against Valdosta on Tuesday at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex.

It was the Lady Wildcats who had dealt the Colquitt girls their lone Region 1-AAAAA defeat last season and a number of those Valdosta players returned this season.

Berl’s worries were unfounded.

Colquitt County rolled to its second straight one-sided victory to open the season, beating Valdosta 5-0.

Colquitt boys lost 0-5 to Valdosta, but two of the matches went to three sets as the young Packers continue to get important early-season experience.

The Lady Packers won at No. 1 singles where veteran Lindsay Jacobs took care of Priscilla Martin. At No. 2, Landi Clark survived a fall that injured her left elbow and defeated Jessica Sharp, 6-1, 6-0.

And Monique Murphy at No. 3 was tested by Justina West’s strong serves, but her consistent play resulted in a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

The No. 1 doubles team of Gracie Qurnell and Anne Yearta also won in straight sets, defeating Carli Davis and Jordan Thomas 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 2 doubles, Berl teamed Jessica Harvin with freshmen Dresden Melton and got a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Lauren Bahnsen and Emma Buescher.

Valdosta lost its No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles players from last year, “But they are still a solid team,” Berl said.

“Our girls played well.”

The Lady Packers opened the season Friday with a 5-0 victory over Houston County, also at home, and will try to win on the road for the first time when they travel to Douglas to meet Coffee on Thursday.

“They are a team on the rise,” Berl said of the Lady Trojans, who upset Tift County in the region tournament last spring and knocked off the Lady Devils 4-1 last week.

The Lady Packers will take part in the Tifton Rotary Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The field will include Athens Academy, the 2005 Class A state runner-up.

In extra matches on Tuesday, Laura Murphy defeated Savanna Lamon 8-2; Megan Traylor and Carli Hester won 7-1; and Cara McCalley and Kayla Kelly deeated Katy Weilbrenner and Laura Robinson.

Colquitt County boys coach Grant Hammack made one change in the lineup he used in the 1-4 loss to Houston County on Friday, moving Shaun Soderstrom from No. 2 doubles to No. 3 singles.

Barclay Mitchell, who played No. 3 singles last week, moved to No. 2 doubles to team with Zach Clifton.

Valdosta was strong at No. 1 singles with Greg Tullos winning over Colquitt County’s Chris Harvin 0-6, 0-6.

Zach Owen won the first set of his No. 2 singles match against Jamie Childree 6-2, but lost the next two 5-7, 2-6.

Soderstrom lost his first varsity singles match, falling to Parker Childree, 1-6, 1-6.

At No. 1 doubles, Bradley Michie and Austin York also won their first set, but then fell 2-6, 3-6 in the final two sets.

Clifton and Mitchell fell to Adam Buescher and Dylan Tullos 1-6, 1-6.

“I am pleased with the effort,” Hammack said. “Even though we lost 0-5, we played much better than we did against Houston. A couple of our matches were winnable.

“But Valdosta has some tournament-experienced players.”

The road will get no easier on Thursday in Douglas. Coffee’s boys have already defeated Tift County this season.

“That’s the way it’s going to be,” Hammack said. “Every match, we are going to be fighting for our lives.”

The Packers, too, will face a tough field in the Tifton Rotary Tournament. Among the entries are Athens Academy, Tift County, Bainbridge, Vidalia and Ware County. Athens Academy advanced to the finals in Class A, where it was defeated by Brookstone 3-1
