Lady Packers to face Lowndes
MOULTRIE — Fresh off three straight wins last week at home that have got them back up to .500 in the Region 1-AAAAA basketball standings, Colquitt County’s girls must go on the road tonight to a venue that has not always been an inviting one.
The Lady Packers defeated Tift County, Houston County and Valdosta last week to raise their overall record to 12-11 and their region record to 5-5, but must face Lowndes in Valdosta tonight.
The Lady Packers have split their two games with Tift County and Houston County, lost twice to Coffee and have swept Valdosta.
A win tonight over the Vikettes at the Charles Cooper Gymnasium will give the Lady Packers another season sweep.
But even though Colquitt took the first meeting between the two longtime region rivals, winning 56-50 at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium two weeks ago, extending their winning streak to four games will take some doing.
The Vikettes have lost just one other region game and will take a 5-2 overall record into the game.
Lowndes and Warner Robins played each other on succeeding nights last weekend and the Demonettes and Vikettes split the two games.
Warner Robins won at home on Friday 51-49. Lowndes won at home on Saturday 68-64.
Despite falling to the Lady Packers on Friday, Houston County’s girls still lead the region with a 6-2 record.
Lowndes and Warner Robins are 5-2, followed by Coffee at 4-3. Colqutt will break above .500 in the region for the first time tonight with a win over the Vikettes.
In the first meeting between the two teams, the Lady Packers got 17 points from Taquella Coates and 16 from Nicolle Thomas.
Taccara Bivins had 14 and Keia Tillman had 12 for the Vikettes.
Coates is averaging 14 points a game for the season and averaged 22 in the three games last week.
The junior post player had 26 against Tift County and 20 each against Houston County and Tift County.
Thomas is averaging 13.4 and had a string of 11 straight games in double-figures snapped when she was held to just seven in the 51-34 victory over Valdosta on Saturday.
Also in region girls play tonight, Houston County (6-2) will travel to Coffee (4-4) and Warner Robins (5-2) will go to Tifton to meet slumping Tift County (2-5). The Lady Devils have lost four region games in a row.
The Colquitt County boys, who won their first Region 1-AAAAA game on Friday with a 70-62 win over Houston County, will have to rebound tonight from a 78-70 loss to Valdosta on Saturday. Andrew Wallace had 27 points for the Packers.
The Packers will take a 8-14 overall record and a 1-9 region mark into tonight’s game against the Vikings, 3-4 in the region.
The Vikings lost Friday night and Saturday night to Warner Robins, which has taken over the region lead with a 6-1 record.
On Saturday, the Demons broke the century mark in a 101-78 victory over the Vikings.
Lowndes edged the Packers 67-66 when the two teams met in Moultrie on Jan. 16.
