Diamond Pack won’t go to playoffs

MOULTRIE — There will be three more games for the Colquitt County baseball team this season.

But no more.

The Packers were eliminated from postseason consideration when they were defeated 16-1 in four innings by Houston County at Ike Aultman Field on Friday and Tift County blanked Coffee 7-0 in Tifton.

Valdosta, Lowndes, Houston County and Tift County will advance to the state playoffs. Each team still has games on Tuesday and Friday remaining.

Valdosta and Lowndes are tied for first place at 6-2 after the Vikings shut out the Wildcats 5-0 on Friday.

Houston County and Tift County are 5-3.

Tift County will make the postseason in baseball for the first time since 1998.

Colquitt County falls to 7-15 overall and 2-6 in the region. The Packers play host to Lowndes at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and finish the season at Coffee at 7 p.m. next Friday.

“It’s been a long time since we went into the last week of the season without something besides pride to play for,” said Colquitt County coach Jerry Croft, who is in his 30th season as the Packers coach.

The Packers, who lost 11-1 to Houston County in Warner Robins, made it easy for the visiting Bears, commiting eight errors and issuing eight walks.

“Sixteen free passes usually spells disaster,” Croft said.

And it did.

The first 14 runs — seven each off starter Andrew Wallace and reliever Andrew McDowell — were unearned.

The final two, off freshman John Michael Harrison in the top of the fourth, were earned.

Houston had just nine hits, but took advantage of the Packers gifts.

The Bears’ big hit was a grand slam by winning pitcher Brian Wilkerson.

Wilkerson raised his record to 8-1 and lowered his ERA from the 1.34 he took into the game. He struck out six batters, including the last three of the game.

The Packers had just four hits: singles by Carter Jones, Matt Weaver and Sam Heath and a solo home run by Chance Pitts in the fourth.
