Lady Pack advances to championship game
MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls basketball game cruised into the Division I championship game of the Great Southern Shootout at Westside of Macon High on Wednesday, knocking off Vidalia 67-46.
The game was the second 21-point victory in a row for the Lady Packers, who defeated Dougherty on Tuesday, 52-31.
The victory will match the Lady Packers with the winner of the game between Westside-Macon and Spalding, which started later on Wednesday. That game will begin at 6 tonight.
The Lady Packers led by 11 at the half, but blew the game open in the third quarter, led by freshman Nicole Thomas, who three consecutive 3-pointers.
Thomas had a career-high 16 points. Sophomore Taquella Coates had a career-high 18 points for the second game in a row and also had 10 rebounds.
Colquitt turned the ball over just 10 times and hit 12-of-16 free throws. The Lady Packers were just 12-of-36 from the line on Tuesday.
“It was a nice-looking game,” Lady Packers coach Joe Parker said. “If you are a coach, it was a pretty game to watch.”
Vidalia was led by Georgia Tech signee Janae Stokes, who had a game-high 23 points. But her teammates combined to score just 23 more.
Colquitt also got 10 points from Jessica Lemus, seven from Nikki Hudson, six from Ashley Stafford, five from Laquita Smith, four from Dorothy Strong and a free throw from Alexa Isaacs.
Stafford added seven assists.
“We were up for the game,” said Parker, whose team raised its record to 7-3 by shooting 50 percent from the field. “The intensity was good from the get-go. We got the ball where it needed to go and we shot it real well. We did a lot of good stuff.”
