Former Packers to speak at FCA breakfast

MOULTRIE — The local Fellowship of Christian Athletes annual breakfast has been named for the last few years in honor of two outstanding former Packer coaches and Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame members, Tom “Babe” White and Roy Saturday.

And at this year’s breakfast, which will be held at 7:15 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21 at the First Baptist Church social hall, several former Packers who either played for worked closely with the revered former coaches will talk about what it was like to have shared the sidelines with them.

Speaking of their times playing for White will be Colquitt County Hall of Famer Bob Montgomery, an end on the 1963 state runner-up team, and Brooks Sheldon, also a former end who played under White and head coach Knuck McCrary, who was a senior on the 1962 Packers football team.

Both Montgomery and Sheldon returned to Moultrie after college and have been prominent businessmen and civic leaders.

Jerry Croft, who was the defensive coordinator for 13 years when Saturday was the highly successful eighth-grade Packers football coach, will talk about his former boss.

Croft also had a successful career as a head coach, leading the Packers baseball team to two state championships before retiring earlier this year. He, too, is a Sports Hall of Fame member.

The local FCA raises money each year to help send students to summer FCA camps.

The organization also ministers through student-initiated and student-led groups called huddles that meet regularly in campuses across the country.

Willie J. Williams and Charlie A. Gray middle schools and Colquitt County High each have huddles.

Corporate level sponsorship of the breakfast is $800 and includes breakfast for eight. Platinum level is $400 and includes breakfast for eight. A silent auction of sports prints also will be held.

For more information or to secure table sponsorships, contact the FCA’s Larry Poole at 890-3112.
