8th-grade boys team wins big

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school eighth-grade boys basketball team rolled to it biggest point total of the season on Monday at the Willie J. Williams Middle School gymnasium, knocking off Newbern Middle School 62-41.

The victory salvaged a split for Colquitt County after the eighth-grade girls fell in the opener 23-21.

The victory raised the Packers record to 3-4 as they jumped out to an 18-6 first-quarter lead and never let up.

After taking a 32-17 lead at the half, Colquitt outscored the visitors 19-10 in the third quarter to take control.

The eighth-graders had four players in double-figures, including Trell Stokes who had a season-high 18, including 12 in the third quarter.

Dominique Pressley had 13 and Jeremy Downs and Derrell Ward each had 12.

Eight of the 10 Packers who got in the game scored. Nathaniel Hill, Quin Roberson and Lawhe Wingfield each had two points and Davis Durham contributed a free throw.

Colquitt was coming off a 45-32 loss at Valdosta last Thursday. Pressley had 16 points in that game. Hill had six, Ward and Downs had four and Durham had two.

The Colquitt County eighth-grade girls, playing without injured starting point guard Lori Sherling, fell behind 8-0 to Newbern and although they closed to within a point on a Shay Lovett basket at the buzzer ending the third quarter, they never could catch the visitors from Valdosta.

Valdosta scored the first five points of the fourth quarter and led 23-17 before Shaniqua McFadden scored a pair of baskets in the final 13 seconds to make the one-point margin.

Lovett, who is nursing a sore ankle and did not start the game, led the Lady Packers with 12 points.

McFadden had four, Persephone Taylor had three and Umeika Henry had one basket.

Colquitt’s eighth-grade girls fall to 2-5 as they head into the holiday break.

Last Thursday, the eighth-grade girls fell to Valdosta 30-19. Henry had 10 points in the game. Taylor added eight and Shabetta Carter had one.

In Valdosta on Monday, the Colquitt County middle schools seventh-grade teams split with Newbern.

The seventh-grade girls snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating Newbern 35-14.

The seventh-grade girls are now 4-3.

Bria Wallace led Colquitt County with 18 points. Miranda Trim added 12. Brittany Taylor had three and Meghan May added two.

The seventh-grade boys came up on the short end of a 33-27 score against Newbern.

Colquitt County was led by Cole Pitts, who had seven points. Cornelius James added six. Trey DeBruce had four, Tevin King and Walter Johnson contributed three each and Quan Daniels and Stacey Blackwell each had two points.

The seventh-grade boys are now 5-2 on the season.

The middle school teams will be off until Friday, Jan. 6, when the eighth-grade teams will travel to Hahira and the seventh-grade teams will play host to Hahira at the Willie J. Williams Middle School gymnasium.
