Cross country teams perform well at state

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High boys cross country team turned in its best performance in a state meet in recent memory by finishing 21st on Saturday in Carrollton.

The Colquitt County girls also performed well, placing 26th.

The Packers were led by Carlos Charles, who finished 95th and had a time of 18:12.48.

The other Colquitt County finishers were Tyler Dismuke, 122nd, 18:43.62; Marcos Gomez, 166th, 19:37.40; Daniel Phillips, 182nd, 19:46.68; Jebb Cato, 191st, 20:03.16; and Nathan Fowler, 202nd, 20:20.21.

“As has been the case lately, with someone having a great race to really help the team, Daniel Phillips and Jebb Cato stood out,” Colquitt County cross country coach Mell Wier said.

“Their performances were their best of the season by far.”

Girma Mecheso of Berkmar won the boys individual championship with a 15:01.67.

Parkview won the boys team championship with 55 points.

Warner Robins turned in the best finish among Region 1-AAAAA teams, placing 20th with 710 points. Colquitt was right behind in 21st place with a 715 points. Tift County was 27th with 761 points and Houston County was 31st with 827 points.

Freshman Carly Banks turned in best finish for the Lady Packers, placing 80th with a 21:50.80.

Senior Kristin Hall, who was competing in her fourth straight state cross country meet, with 124th with a 23:15.43. Freshman Morgan Hayes was 146th with a 24:07.51; freshman Jenna Jones was 179th with a 25:29.60; Marissa Aldridge was 186th with a 25:54.86; Sarah Tyndall was 193rd with a 26:23.07; and Laura Robinson was 206th with a 27:42.28.

“The girls did as they have done all season in running solid and consistent races,” Wier said. “The team was led again by freshman Carly Banks and senior Kristin Hall.”

Jackie Drouin won the girls race with an 18:07.34 to lead Collins Hill to the team championship.

Also from Region 1-AAAAA, Houston County was 17th with 533 points; Warner Robins was 18th with 565 points; and Tift County was 20th with 617 points.

The Lady Packers had 705 points to finish 26th.

The Packers placed third and the Lady Packers were fourth in the Region 1-AAAAA meet in Warner Robins to qualify for the state meet.

“The future looks bright for both the Packers and the Lady Packers as both teams return five of the seven people who competed at the state championship meet,” Wier said.
