Colquitt travels to Coffee
MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls have a chance to finish in tie for the best regular-season record in Region 1-AAAAA when they travel to Douglas tonight to meet Coffee High.
Colquitt’s boys are just trying to stop the bleeding.
The Packers will take a four-game losing streak to Douglas, including three that sent their once fine 4-2 region record spiraling down to 4-5.
With a win tonight and some help, the Packers could still climb from their current fourth spot in the region standings.
“We were second most of the time,” Packers head coach Kirven Davis said Monday. “We lost our sense of urgency.
“But that’s my job to get us focused.”
After defeating Valdosta 62-54 on Jan. 20, the Packers have lost to East Gadsden and then, last week, to Tift County, Houston County and Lowndes.
Once 7-3, the Packers are now 11-10 overall.
Tonight’s game will start a fifth straight week in which Colquitt has played on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights.
“That can wear you down,” Davis said.
“But we’re not discouraged at all. We’ve still got a full season (the tournaments).”
The Packers defeated Coffee 64-58 back on Jan. 10 in Moultrie. It was one of five losses in eight region games for the Trojans, who are coming off a tough 62-58 double-overtime loss to Tift County on Saturday.
“We’ll be focused tonight,” Davis said. “I promise you that.”
The Packers have been starting senior James Trimble and junior Andrew Wallace in the front court with Antwan Tuff and Jeremy DeBruce on the wings and Orion Ponder at point guard.
Tuff, Trimble and Wallace continue to average in double figure. Tuff is averaging 13.6; Trimble 11.7; and Wallace, who has 10 more points in each of the last five games, is averaging 10.6
“Jeremy and Andrew are pretty consistent,” Davis said. “We need James and Tuff to play well. If they don’t, we struggle.”
Junior Rashawn Melvin could continue to see more playing time. He scored 21 points against Thomasville and gave the Packers a second-quarter spark against Lowndes on Saturday.
“He’s streaky,” Davis said of Melvin. “But he can knock them down in bunches.”
The Lady Packers have played two of their best games back-to-back in victories over Houston County on Friday and in the rare win over Lowndes on Saturday.
It appears as if the Lady Packers will not be able to take the No. 1 seed in the tournament, but could finish in a tie for first place in the regular season if Lowndes beats Tift County on Friday and falls to 0-9 Valdosta on Saturday or if Tift County beats Lowndes and falls to Houston on Friday.
Tift County will clinch the No. 1 seed in the tournament, which opens Feb. 8 in Tifton, if it defeats Lowndes on Tuesday.
The Lady Packers will try to finish a regular-season sweep of Coffee tonight. Colquitt’s girls won 66-53 in Douglas.
Senior Ashley Stafford has led the Lady Packers outstanding play in its last two games. She scored 14 points against Houston on Friday and had 19 points and 13 rebounds in the win over Lowndes that snapped the Vikettes 14-game winning streak.
Stafford is likely to be joined in the backcourt by Nikki Hudson and freshman Nicolle Thomas. Taquella Coates and Jessica Lemus will be in the front court. Thomas had 30 points in the last two games; Coates, 23.
