Colquitt drops two to Tift County
MOULTRIE — Colquitt County dropped its second Region 1-AAAAA doubleheader of the season against Tift County on Tuesday in Tifton, with the Lady Packers falling 51-32 and Colquitt’s boys losing a close one 49-47.
The boys game was tied 47-47 with 4.7 second left when Rashawn Melvin drove the lane and was called for an offensive foul.
Packers coach Kirven Davis protested the call and was given a technical foul.
Tift County’s Keith Cagle hit one of the two free throws to give the Blue Devils the lead.
Maurice Morrow converted another free throw with 3.6 seconds left to put the Blue Devils, ranked No. 8 in the state in Class AAAAA, up to stay.
The Blue Devils remain undefeated and in first place in the region with a 6-0 record.
Melvin and Antwan Tuff led the Packers with 11 points each.
Andrew Wallace had 10 and Orion Ponder added eight. James Trimble was held to five.
The loss was the second in a row for the Packers, who fall to 11-8 on the season.
But it was the second time the Packers have played the Blue Devils down to the wire.
Back on Jan. 13, Tift County won in Moultrie 57-52, with the Blue Devils Justin Brownlee pouring in 24 points.
Tuff had 25 against the Blue Devils in Moultrie.
In the girls game, Tift County converted 30-of-38 free throws and rallied from a 13-8 first quarter deficit to defeat the Lady Packers for the third time this season.
The loss drops Colquitt County’s girls to 13-7 overall and 4-3 in the region with games at Houston County (3-3 in the region) on Friday and Lowndes (6-1) at home on Saturday.
The Lady Devils raise their region record to 4-2.
It was the Lady Packers third loss of the season to Tift County’s girls.
Colquitt lost 44-42 in the Lowndes tournament at 47-27 in Moultrie on Jan. 13.
The Lady Devils regrouped after a lethargic first quarter to outscore the Lady Packers 19-4 in the second quarter and rolled from there.
Tift outscored Colquitt 16-8 in the fourth quarter despite making just one basket. Tift converted 14 free throws in the quarter.
Tift’s Jessica Jenkins had 16 points, but had only one basket.
Colquitt went to the line just 15 times, converting eight. The Packers turned the ball over just 11 times and had 10 takeaways.
But once the Lady Devils got the lead, they were in no hurry to shoot the basketball.
“They know what to do when they get up,” Lady Packers coach Joe Parker said.
The Lady Packers were led in scoring by Jessica Lemus, who had eight points.
Taquella Coates had seven, Ashley Stafford had six, Nicolle Thomas had four, Nikki Hudson had three and Dorothy Strong and Tiffany Troupe each had two.
