Lady Packers fall in tournament finale

MOULTRIE — It was apparent at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium on Saturday why Furman University was interested in signing Westover’s Kendra Berry.

The Lady Patriots senior guard scored 28 points to lead Westover to a 50-36 victory over Colquitt County in the final girls game of the first Colquitt County Roundball Classic, easily winning the tournament’s most valuable player plaque.

The Lady Patriots won all three of their games to win the outstanding team trophy in the non-elimination tournament.

The Lady Packers, who had defeated Boyd Anderson and South Miami in their first two games, trailed in the game after a Berry basket gave the Lady Patriots a 9-8 lead with five seconds left in the first quarter.

But Colquitt pulled to within one at 33-32 on a Taquella Coates put-back with 6:15 left in the game.

But it was all Westover the rest of the way, with the Lady Patriots outscoring the tournaments hosts 17-6 in the final 5:10.

And Berry, the future Palladin, did most of the damage scoring 10 points down the stretch.

Colquitt never could stop her array of jumpers, many of which came in heavy traffic.

The Lady Packers trailed by seven when Westover starting point guard Dominique Bryant injured a knee and left the game never to return with 6:20 left in the third quarter.

Colquitt made a run, outscoring Westover 11-6 in the third quarter and getting to within a point heading into the final quarter.

Bryant, who joined Berry on the all-tournament team, had 10 points for Westover before leaving the game.

Tia Mallard added seven, including six in the fourth quarter, Brittany Gilbert and Jessica Edison each had two and Porshia Bryant added a free throw.

Taquella Coates led the Lady Packers with 12 points.

Nikki Hudson, Tiffany Troupe and Shay Lovett each had six and Nicolle Thomas had four.

Coates, who had double-doubles in the Lady Packers first two games of the tournament, and Hudson also were named to the all-tournament girls team.

Also named to the all-tournament girls team were Dorothy Robinson of Boyd Anderson, Shakima Wiggins of Washington County and Tiffany Anderson of Dougherty.

The Lady Packers will take a 6-5 record into Tuesday’s 6 p.m. meeting with Thomas County Central at the Espy Gymnasium.

The result Colquitt County-Westover boys game was not available at press time.

Boyd Anderson won the outstanding boys team trophy after defeating defending Alabama 6-A state champion Jeff Davis 74-71 on Saturday. Coached by former Packer Eugene Richardson, the Cobras won all three of their tournament games.

The Cobras were led on Saturday by tournament MVP Ivan Aska,who had 22 points. Anthony Phillips, also on the all-tournament team, had 12 points.

Courtney Fortson had 25 points and Varez Ward added 21 for Jeff Davis.

Fortson also was named to the all-tournament team.

The Boyd Anderson boys are now 14-2.

Also named to the all-tournament boys team were Isiah Brown of South Miami and Marvin Harris of Washington County.

In the other boys game on Saturday, South Miami defeated Washington County 66-51.

Michael Baptiste led South Miami with 18 points.

Brown added 14 and Carl Ballard had 12.

In Saturday’s first girls game, Dougherty defeated Washington County 69-56. Adreinne Alls had 23 poitns and Tiffany Anderson added 14 for the Lady Trojans. Kiiursti Brown had 10.

Shakima Wiggins had 26 points to lead Washington County. Raven Washington had 10.

The Albany girls defeated South Miami on Satuday, 52-47.

Catharyn Clyde had 15, Shanti Childs had 14 and Jasmine Myers had 11 for the Squaws.

Nakeria Williams and Witney Eddy each had 11 for South Miami.

The Lee County girls won their final game of the tournament on Saturday, defeating Boyd Anderson 59-52.

Yolanda Berryhill led the Lady Trojans with 25 points. Bicanna Neal had 12 and Kayla Jones tossed in 11 for Lee County.

Dorothy Robinson had 23 and Stacy Jones added 13 for Boyd Anderson.
