Swimmers, divers in action today
MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County swimming and diving teams will play host to the Packer Invitational today, but they will have to go to Albany to compete.
The meet, the first held jointly by the two Colquitt County teams, will be held at Darton College’s indoor pool.
The diving competition is expected to start at 9 a.m. and the swimming portion about an hour later. The swim meet is expected to draw nine teams.
The Colquitt County swim team is coached by Talia Stewart.
The swimmers have taken part in two meets this season, in the Coffee Trojan Invitational at South Georgia College in Douglas and in the Bearcat Bash at the Bainbridge YMCA.
Caroline Rogers took a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley and scored 13 points for Colquitt County in Douglas and was second in the event in Bainbridge. She also was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Rogers also has been on the relay team that also includes Amy Peek, Ashley Paramore and Kara Dobbs.
Also swimming for Colquitt County so far this season has been Jay Desselle, Chris Phillips, Caleb Meister, Taylor Walsh, Nathan Yost, Joe Peacock, Katy Weilbrenner, Jenny Garner, Lauri Saunders, Jesi Faulkner, Emily Casteel, Amber Phillips, Aubrey Perryman, Meagan White and Sarah Jenkins.
All seven members of the Colquitt County girls diving team and three of the four boys have already qualified for next month’s state championships, but the team is seeking more experience as it prepares for the state meet.
Diving for Colquitt County today will be Hannah Moore, Anna Aguero, Erin Goodman, Kelsey Goodman, Ann Perry Blank, Maddie Qurnell, Ali Lepech, Owen Blank, Ryan Helms, Jacob Russell and Henry Norman.
All but Norman, who is a freshman, turned in state qualifying scores at Packer Invitational diving meet held Nov. 16 at the Moose Moss Aquatic Center.
Moss Farms Diving coach Ed Goodman, who trains the members of the Colquitt County High team, said Norman has “been getting better. Hopefully, he can get it done.”
Although all seven Colquitt County girls have qualified, only four can compete at the state meet. Goodman said the pre-state meet competitions will help determine which four dive at the state meet.
Helms, a junior, is a two-time Class AAAAA state champion. Moore was the girls championship as a freshman and was third last year.
