2nd defendant in Norman Park robbery sentenced
MOULTRIE, Ga. — The second of two defendants in a 2017 robbery in Norman Park carried out with a pellet gun received a 20-year sentence in a recent Colquitt County Superior Court session.
Quantavious Powell, 21, pleaded guilty to armed robbery on Nov. 14 in the hold-up of a One Stop location.
Superior Court Judge James E. Hardy sentenced Powell to serve 10 years in prison and an equal amount of time on probation for his role in the robbery of the 4254 U.S. Hwy. 319 N. convenience store.
Powell and Clayton Jonathan Bentley were arrested within hours of the hold-up that occurred at about 6:50 p.m. on Nov. 8, 2017.
Police say that Powell, wearing a black mask, entered the store, forced a female clerk behind the counter and demanded money from the cash register and safe. The clerk handed the cash over to the gunman.
However, a witness saw a male wearing clothes matching the description of those worn by the gunman run into a residence in the 300 block of Mill Street.
Tenants there gave police permission to enter and search the residence, where they found Powell and Bentley.
At the top of the stairs in the residence officers found a red bookbag containing two masks and $1,681 in cash, along with a pellet pistol.
Police identified Bentley, who also was wearing a mask, with the help of store video. He was accused of standing outside the store during the robbery and acting as lookout.
A grand jury indicted Powell on charges of armed robbery, robbery by intimidation, aggravated assault and kidnapping, with the latter three charges dismissed as part of the plea arrangement.
Hardy also ordered him to pay $1,500 in restitution to the business, perform 120 hours of community service work, have no contact with the victims and receive substance abuse evaluation and treatment.
Bentley, 19, pleaded guilty on May 10 to charges of robbery by force and false imprisonment. He also received a 20-year sentence, of which eight are to be served in prison and the balance on probation.
