Rants and Raves

Not rocket science

“Today I watched the debris/yard trash truck work its ‘claw.’ The operator used it to load a rather large pile of debris. When he got down to the last few twigs (an amount I could have picked up with my hands in one trip) he was still trying to use that claw. In the process at that particular location, he had a rather large scalp — actually a hole — dug out of the grass. I’ve seen this all over town. Folks this is not rocket science. The man has to get down off the rig to get back in the truck. Why not pick up those last twigs and brush with a pitchfork on the way back to the cab of the truck. As the old saying goes, ‘we have the technology.’

Gun thefts

“What’s the deal with the punks stealing guns on Tallokas Road? One that was arrested had just got caught in November doing the same thing. Those are felony charges and he should have still been locked up. Thanks to Mr. Don for catching them. Maybe they will no longer be a nuisance to society.

Obesity issue

“Now that the health hazards of smoking are being addressed it’s time to confront the alarming problem of obesity in our area.

No recourse

“The real problem with the intermodal facility is that it was built with grant money and in-kind services to fit a certain need. We are not sure just what that need was. In fact, we would be hard pressed to find one. But the issue becomes, it just has to sit there. We can’t use it for anything else. That’s a flaw in our government. In other words, we can’t salvage this structure/property and put it to better use. We have to live with our mistakes. There should be a provision undergirded with common sense that if a project like this fails its intent that we be able to salvage it through repurpose.

Smoking

“You say it’s your right to smoke. Well it’s my right to not have to breathe your carcinogens. As well, I don’t want to help pay for your insurance premiums, if you work for local government. You do two things in that instance. You poison the air around you and you add to a long list of health issues where we have to assume some of the costs for treatments.

My answer

“Let me answer your question about TV standards and your chagrin with the offerings. Many TV shows use ‘shock factor’ to propel them to big money-making status. And because we have such a dumbed-down society, this kind of programming is gobbled up. I’m really disappointed in the History and Discovery channels. While they do have some good programs now and then, the volume of good ones they show is so low it belies the very name of the channels. Many of the shows are what I call gimmick shows. And like you said, so many of them have to use gutter talk to get laughs/attention. Even some of the advertising falls into that vein.
