5K run planned for Saturday for Donate Life Florida

LIVE OAK, Fla. — Heroes will descend on Heritage Park & Gardens this weekend.

Every day heroes, and maybe even a superhero or two, will be on hand for the second Be A Hero Family Fun Run/Walk 5K. The run, which is sponsored by the Suwannee County Tax Collector’s Office to benefit Donate Life Florida, will begin at 7:30 a.m. Registration is available on site, beginning at 6:45 a.m.

Registration is also available online at www.raceentry.com or at www.suwanneecountytax.com and as of Wednesday afternoon, the turnout online was substantially higher than a year ago. Chad Wainwright, with the Tax Collector’s Office, said there had already been 40 registered for the race. Last year, there was 46 total, the vast majority signing up on raceday. Registration for adults is $20 and children, 12 and under, are $5 with a registered adult.

“I’m thinking we’re going to have a really big turnout this year,” Wainwright said.

In addition to expecting a larger turnout for the race, Wainwright said the hope is for more fun as well.

Sticking with the “Be a Hero” theme, racers are permitted to run the 3.1-mile course in superhero attire.

Last year, Wainwright stood alone. Well, kind of.

“I don’t dress up but I wear a ball cap, themed ball caps that are super hero, so that was my extent,” he said. “But we’ve got a couple coming this year dressed up from what I understand.

“We’re excited about that. It’ll bring a little more fun to it.”

Still, Wainwright said the biggest mission of the race is to raise awareness for Donate Life Florida, and proceeds. So far, the local push has already surpassed the $4,000 donated a year ago during the entire month of April.

“We thought it would bring people together for organ donors and for education along with it as well,” he added. “We have guest speakers that come and speak about their experiences.”
