Suspect blames crime spree on meth
MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Moultrie man was charged with a variety of offenses after he was allegedly caught trying to break into a house he thought was his own.
Rodney Shane Fulgham, 35, 2010 West Blvd., blamed it all on the drugs, telling Colquitt County sheriff’s investigators he couldn’t even remember the things he’s accused of doing after a two-week meth binge.
The situation came to the attention of law enforcement about 1:30 a.m. July 22 after Dale Yarbrough’s security system alerted him to activity outside his house in the 800 block of Mike Horne Road, Colquitt County Sheriff’s Investigator Chris Robinson said Monday.
Yarbrough went out and saw a man trying to get into his house. He retrieved a handgun and confronted the man, who ran away. Yarbrough then called 911.
Officers determined that Yarbrough’s truck had been entered. Some peanuts and a bottle of water that had been in the truck had been consumed, but nothing else appeared to be missing from there, Robinson said.
A deputy responding to the call at Yarbrough’s residence saw a car’s brake lights on in a carport in the 900 block of Mike Horne Road, Robinson said. Later investigation found the key of a padlock in the car’s ignition. A 9mm handgun was in the seat.
The gun did not belong to the vehicle’s owner, Robinson said, and it doesn’t match any weapons that have been reported stolen.
In a field adjacent to that house, deputies found a black Nissan Altima bogged down. They called for a wrecker, Robinson said, but they wound up getting a neighbor to use his tractor to get the car out of the field.
The registration in the car listed its owner as Fulgham, Robinson said.
As the neighbor, Chad Roberts, of the 200 block of Massey Road, was using his tractor to help the deputies get the Altima out of the field, someone entered his house, took his keys off the counter and drove away in his truck.
Roberts’ truck was later recovered just inside Colquitt County near Sale City. A gun and some tools were missing and still haven’t been recovered, Robinson said.
That evening — 7:21 p.m., to be exact — deputies responded to Horne’s Body Shop, 211 Edwards St., where Fulgham was caught trying to remove the electric meter base to disconnect the power.
Robinson said Fulgham said he had tried to get into Yarbrough’s house because he thought it was his own residence, and he said he stole Roberts’ truck because he thought the deputies were shooting at him and he needed to get away.
“He claimed he had been smoking meth and only remembered bits and pieces,” Robinson said.
Fulgham was charged with two counts of criminal attempt, two counts of entering an automobile with intent to commit a crime, and one count each of possession of arms by a convicted felon, burglary and theft by taking.
