Professor recognized as influential Asian American
DALTON, Ga. — Baogang Guo was recently recognized as one of the 25 Most Influential Asian Americans by Georgia Asian Times. Guo, a political science professor at Dalton State College, was honored by the newspaper at a gala in Duluth recently for Asian American Heritage Month. He was chosen out of 180 nominees. Nominees must be outstanding Asian American individuals “who have exhibited character necessary to lead, inspire, and challenge, and to influence.” Guo has a track record of promoting international education in Georgia. He has co-directed the University System of Georgia’s Asia Council’s flagship study abroad program — Summer Study Abroad in China — since 2005. This program has taken more than 400 students and faculty members to China. The selection committee noted that “Guo is one of those rare professors who seamlessly blends scholarship, teaching and student engagement, leading to substantial impact on Georgia’s students, communities, culture and economy.”
Thief cheats store’s new employee
MOULTRIE, Ga. — A thief took advantage of a new convenience store employee on Wednesday to walk out with $19 worth of beer and gasoline valued at $20. Raceway, 1301 Veterans Parkway, reported that at 3:42 a.m. a man came in while a new employee was working. He told the employee that another clerk allows him to charge gas and other merchandise on a charge account. The man asked for a 12-pack of Bud Light beer and a 6-pack of Mike’s Hard Lemonade after he had pumped $20 in gas. Store video shows the suspect and female employee talking and him handing her a piece of paper after she rings up the merchandise. The paper had a woman’s name on it and the phone number given was for a car dealership. The suspect left in a dark blue Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, police said. The store manager gave police the name of the suspect, who was identified by another employee. The store does not allow customers to charge merchandise, the manager told police.
