Event teaches students about local agriculture
MOULTRIE, Ga. — Colquitt County agricultural organizations sponsored the Ag Awareness Expo for fourth grade students May 3-5 at the Colquitt County Ag Complex.
The sponsors included Colquitt County Farm Bureau, Georgia Cotton Women, Colquitt County Young Farmer Program, the UGA Extension Service in Colquitt County and the Moultrie-Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee.
Their purpose was to provide information to students about the different commodities grown in Colquitt County and how agriculture affects each of them and their daily lives, according to a press release.
There are usually 10 different commodity stations each year that the students go to in a rotation. The commodities featured this year were: Cotton by the Georgia Cotton Comission; Peanuts by the Georgia Peanut Commission; 4H Poultry Judging by Zona Medley and 4H students; FFA by the Colquitt County FFA students; household and garden safety by Shawn Collins; Vegetables by UGA Extension Service – Colquitt County; and Forestry by Georgia Forestry Service. To complete the rotation the event had a livestock exhibit featuring show pigs, goats, heifer, rabbits, chickens and a turkey; an equipment exhibit; and grilled peanut butter sandwiches.
The Ag Awareness Expo was started by Colquitt County Farm Bureau in 2009. This year marked the eighth annual event. Approximately 800 fourth grade students from all ten Colquitt County elementary schools attended.
The exhibitors show pictures, demonstrate, have “hands-on” activities, and interact with the students to explain how and where their food and clothing actually comes from.
