Letter campaign targets former Packers in military

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County High School’s French Club is looking for a few good men … and women.

The group is sponsoring a project, “Proud of Packer Power in the Military,” to write letters of support to former CCHS students who are presently serving in the military.

“Right now the people serving in the military need a lot of support,” said Tiffany Hall, treasurer of the French Club and a senior at CCHS.

The club has about 15 names so far. Club sponsor Dottie Bynum said that she had notified teachers at the school of the project and that an announcement had been made on the school’s Channel Pack television station. Some students took letters to their churches and other places in the community.

“My mom works at Stringfellow,” said CCHS senior Justin Liles, who serves as vice president of the French Club. “Some people she works with have brought names.”

The information requested by the club is the name of the person in the military, the branch of military, mailing and e-mail addresses, graduation year and the name of the person submitting the information.

The information can be mailed to Dorothy Bynum, 1800 Park Ave., Moultrie Ga., 31776, or e-mailed to dbynum@colquitt.k12.ga.us

The graduation year is needed so writers can have an idea of the age group of the person they are contacting.

“It’s a good clue of how to write the letter, of what to include,” said Hall.

The club, which currently has 42 members, is hoping to get the entire school involved. Bynum is hoping that clubs, classes or individuals will “adopt a former Packer.”

The plan is for members of the French Club to contact the military personnel and explain the project. Then someone, either the French Club or other groups who are participating, will keep in contact through letters or e-mail.

“I will request that teachers notify me when they contact someone, so we can be sure that no one is left out,” said Bynum.

Bynum hopes that this will be an ongoing project for the French Club.

“The French Club has always been a club that talked about France and French culture,” Bynum said. “We thought it would be nice to expand the club.”

The club met on Wednesday to finalize plans and to sign letters that will be sent to the former CCHS students.

“It’s a chance for people in Colquitt County to show how proud they are of CCHS alumni who are serving our country,” said Jessica Smithwick, secretary of the French Club.
