Shootout suspect charged after chase

A Moultrie man identified by police earlier this year as a participant in a shootout at an apartment complex parking lot was in custody after he led police on a Saturday afternoon chase.
After leading police out of town in a vehicle pursuit, the driver, later identified as Darnell Slaughter III, wrecked and ran before police chased him down, Moultrie Police Department reports said. An officer attempted to stop the silver Ford 500 Slaughter was driving after he failed to use a turn signal at the intersection of Elliot Brown and Northside Drive.
Instead of stopping, the driver jumped a curb on Shy Manor Drive, drove through a field and then back to Shy Manor Drive. After nearly losing control at the intersection of Elliot Brown Street, the driver eventually got onto West Bypass, running several stop signs.
After getting onto Old Doerun Road, police said, the driver reached speeds of 125 miles per hour. When he tried to turn onto Mill Pond the car was driven into an open area and the driver ran from the wrecked car. Police caught him a short distance from the car.
Slaughter III, 26, 502 Ninth St. S.W., was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, failure to stop at stop sign, driving under the influence (less safe), turn signal required, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving and two counts of failure to appear.
Police had identified Slaughter in June as one of two men who shot at each other at Shy Manor apartments. They believed that Slaughter was injured in the incident, but he escaped and was not taken into custody.
He was not charged in the shooting at the time. The other man identified by police, Richard Williams, was treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen and released form the hospital. Police believe that Slaughter also was shot in the arm and also possibly in the abdomen.
It was not the first time that Slaughter disappeared. On Feb. 22, 2012, Slaughter made a plea deal to settle two criminal cases but had avoided law enforcement since he failed to finalize that plea deal.
Colquitt County court records said that Slaughter pleaded guilty in June 2010 to theft by receiving and was sentenced to probation. When he was arrested in November 2010 on charges of possession of firearm by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of cocaine he was five months in arrears on his probation payments.
