Packers split region doubleheader with Tift

The Colquitt County baseball team avoided a split in its Region 1-AAAAAA doubleheader with Tift County on Friday at Ike Aultman Field with a 7-1 victory in the second game.

With the split, the Packers are now 7-4 overall and 5-1 in the region.

In the first game, Packers starter Aubrey McCarty gave up a three-run home run to Devonair McCray in a five-run Tift County second inning and the Blue Devils cruised to a 10-5 victory.

McCarty pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up 10 runs and 10 hits including three homers. Tift’s Blake Suggs went 4-for-4.

Zach Bullard went the distance to get the win for the Blue Devils, although he gave up 11 hits. Colquitt trailed 10-2 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

And while McCarty was hit hard while pitching, he was sound at the plate with three hits, including a double

Mack Hathcock, who went into the doubleheader         hitting .526, went 3-for-4.

Ross Goforth, Blake Bennett and Garrett Pearce had the other other Packer base hits.

Junior Erislandy Pita got the final out for the Packers in the top of the seventh, striking out Zeke Dodson.

The Blue Devils victory snapped a three-game losing streak.

But Cole Bryant rescued the Packers in Game 2, pitching six innings to get the victory.

Blake Bennett pitched the seventh.

Goforth hit his sixth home run of the year in the nightcap for the Packers.

In another region doubleheader on Friday, Lowndes swept Valdosta 10-2 and 2-0.

Coffee won the first game of its doubleheader with Camden and was leading in the second.
