Propst selected for USA Today top coach contest

Colquitt County coach Rush Propst has been selected by USA Today High School Sports as one of eight Georgia coaches to be entered in its contest to choose the best high school coach in the country.

Voting is in three rounds, the first of which ends at noon today.

The 51 winners – those from each state plus Washington, D.C. – advance to a regional round.

The athletic department of the winning coach will receive $2,000.

Of this and that:

•  Defending Division II National Champion Valdosta State is 4-0 after its 52-14 victory over Florida Tech on Saturday.

D’Amonte Ridley had two pass receptions for 10 yards. Amel Magwood had four tackles, Davis Durham had two and Sharmaine Washington had one. John Gray also played for the Blazers, who will play at West Alabama on Thursday.

•  Tommy Hudson had three catches for 33 yards and a 7-yard second quarter touchdown as Chattanooga defeated Western Carolina 42-21 on Saturday.

Now 3-2, the Mocs will be home on Saturday to face Furman.

•  Cameron Erving is expected get his 20th straight start for Florida State when the Seminoles travel to Clemson on Oct. 19.

The Seminoles went to 5-0 with a 63-0 victory over Maryland last Saturday that tied the NCAA record for the most lopsided win over a ranked opponent.

•  DeRhyan Arnold had three tackles, including a sack, in Shorter’s 41-0 loss to North Alabama last Saturday.

Now 0-5, Shorter will be home to face Carson-Newman on Saturday.

•  In Louisiana Tech’s 38-35 victory over UTEP on Saturday, Tevin King had two carries for 37 yards, before leaving the game with an ankle injury. One of those carries was for 30 yards. He also had a kickoff return of 33 yards.

•  Georgia Southern linebacker Quaun Daniels has suffered an injury and has been red-shirted this season.

•  Johnny Ward was credited with an assisted tackle in South Florida’s 26-20 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday at Raymond James Stadium.

The Bulls will travel to play at UConn on Saturday.

•  Henderson State, which boasts R.J. Taylor as its preseason All American right tackle, is 5-0 after defeating Northwest Oklahoma State 42-0 last Saturday.

The Reddies will face Southwest Oklahoma State on Saturday.

•  Derrell Ward had a solo and an assisted tackle for Tuskegee in the Tigers 21-13 victory over Fort Valley State last week.

Tuskegee, now 4-1, will face Morehouse on Saturday.

•  Bryce Giddens and the Arkansas State Red Wolves will try to improve on their 2-3 record when they play host to Idaho on Saturday. Giddens is expected to start his 17th straight game.

• The University of Georgia women’s swimming and diving team has three Colquitt countians on its roster: Ann-Perry Blank, Haley Goodman and Elizabeth Ann Kirkland.

Blank took first place on the 3-meter springboard in a recent meet against Kentucky.

Georgia’s next meet will be Oct. 15 at Georgia Tech.
