MOULTRIE — When the Colquitt County tennis match with Tift County was called off because of lightning and rain on Monday at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex, the match officially did not count.

But the Packers and Lady Packers were the big winners.

With no other matches remaining before Friday’s Region 1-AAAAA tournament at the Abraham Baldwin College courts, Colquitt’s girls and boys teams finish the season undefeated and claim the regular-season region championships.

The Packers are 11-1 overall and 5-0 against region opponents, beating each of the other five teams one time.

Although they were unable to complete another victory over Tift County on Monday, the Packers defeated the Blue Devils 4-1 in the finals of last month’s Tifton Rotary Tournament.

The Lady Packers are 10-2 and are 7-0 against region foes. Among their victories is a 4-1 win over Tift County on March 8 in the Valdosta Invitational.

The titles give both teams byes to the region tournament finals and guarantee them berths in the state tournament.

“This is what we wanted,” Hammack said.

The top two teams from the region will advance to state.

The Packers and Lady Packers will have plenty of incentive to win the tournament championship and go to the state tournament as the top seed.

The Region 1-AAAAA champions will be home for the first three rounds of the state tournaments, as long as they keep winning.

“We could go go all the way to the Final Four and never leave Moultrie,” Colquitt County coach Grant Hammack said.

Seeding for the region tournament will be completed Friday morning before the play begins.

Hammack said he expects the Lowndes boys team, which lost to the Packers 2-3 last Thursday, to be the No. 2 seed.

Lee County is the girls team that concerns Hammack the most. Colquitt edged the Lady Trojans 3-2 last week.

The only match that was completed before the lightning detector sounded Monday saw Colquitt County’s No. 1 boys player Nathaniel Hiers defeat Jacob Sauls 6-1, 6-0.

Hiers defeated Sauls 6-2, 6-4 last month. He will take an 11-1 record into region tournament.

At No. 2 singles, Ramsey al-Hakim was leading Jarred Sauls 7-6 (7-0), 0-1, when he was pulled from the court.

Brian Michie, at No. 3, was going for his 11th victory of the season and was leading Josh Bowen 6-0, 4-3.

Michie beat Bowen 6-4, 6-4 in the team’s earlier meeting.

At Taylor Dekalb and Jason Berl also were leading, holding a 7-5, 3-1 advantage over Bo Gray and Daniel Erickson.

At No. 2 doubles, Clayton Brooks and Bradley Allen also were leading.

Colquitt’s girls appeared to have all three singles matches well in hand. At No. 1, Ashley Jacobs led Becky Alt, 6-2, 3-1. At No. 2 Lindsey Jacobs led Whitney Lightfoot 6-2, 4-0. And at No. 3, Amber Eunice led Susan Dutcher 6-0.

In doubles, Colquitt’s No. 1 team of Anna Jordan and Rebecca Edwards trailed 4-6, 0-1. Colquitt trailed at No. 2 doubles 0-1.
