For June 25
Applause
“I want to applaud officer Chris Thomas for coming to our neighborhood to where a dog was chained up without adequate food and water. He made sure the dog was taken care of. He did a great job.”
Just how it is
“Colquitt County has had female deputies and probably will have some more. But there are situations where a female deputy cannot do the job of a male deputy. That’s just the way it is.”
Have fun
“Go ahead and smoke yourself to death. We can’t stop you. Have fun.”
In response
“If you are not intelligent enough to stop smoking or at least intelligent enough not to smoke around me and my kids, you are not intelligent enough to discuss this issue.”
I care
“When one has severe asthma, you may struggle just to breathe. I should be able to go into a restaurant and have a meal without this challenge. I have a disease that I did not bring upon myself. If you smoke, eventually you will have emphysema by your own choice. Then you will appreciate the ability just to breathe. I am not being hard-headed. I care about other people.”
Bored
“One day I’m going to read Dwain Walden’s column all the way through. I get so bored with it, I fall asleep before I get through.”
What I see
“I’ve seen people sit right in front of me smoking a cigarette and all the time talking about how much their medicine cost or how much groceries cost. Look at what they pay for cigarettes — something that is not a necessity.”
Don’t need it
“The sheriff is asking for money for DARE supplies? In the past, sheriffs have not asked for these funds. They came from drug forfeitures with money left over. What’s wrong with this picture?”
Alcohol issue
“Times may be changing but God never changes. The restaurant owners quoted in your story about alcohol sales on Sunday should know that a lot of their customers are church-going people. We would choose not to go there if this law changes and they sell alcohol on Sundays.”
It’s about love
“Spanking may be all right if done properly. But leaving marks for more than a few minutes is not proper.
“God disciplines us out of love. He does not beat us into submission.
“It’s not about scare tactics, it’s about love.”
Good news
“Good news, maybe, for the citizens of Spence Field subdivision who have been through so many problems waiting for the paving of their roads.
“The state DOT has been doing some soil testing but hopefully the nightmare will begin to come to an end this week.
“Thanks for your patience. These federal grants help pay for these roads, but the red tape involved wears our patience thin.”
