Middle school tennis opens with sweep

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle schools tennis team opened its season on Thursday with a sweep of Lowndes at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex.
The middle school girls won 5-0. The boys won 4-1.
For the girls team, Alexa Isaacs won at No. 1 singles, defeating Katie Shipman 8-1.
Laura Murphy won at No. 2 singles, defeating Emily Backes 8-1.
At No. 3 singles, Cara McCalley won over Ashley Dickert 8-0.
At No. 1 doubles, Katy Weilbrenner and Carly Hester won over Katie Skaggs and Alison Sims 8-0.
At No. 2 doubles, Rachel Tucker and Ashton Eunice defeated Shayla Samaras and Kasey Encott 8-0.
Colquitt County’s boys won at No. 1 singles where Chris Harvin defeated Thomas Baltrus 8-5. At No. 2 singles, the Packers’ Zach Clifton defeated Tyler Armstrong 8-3.
The only Colquitt County loss came at No. 3 singles, where Brandon Oaks fell to Zack Subanouder, 6-8.
At No. 1 doubles, Colquitt County’s Ryan Sherling and Blake Jenkins defeated Rodney Luker and Tyler Dasher 8-1.
At No. 2 doubles, Jacob Tompkins and Reed Whittaker defeated Daniel Temples and Devin Thigpen 8-0.
The Colquitt County teams also fared well in the extra matches.
Ivy Jane Reeves and Constance Terrell won over Chancey Craig and Erica Gaskins 6-0; Jana Harvin and Laura Robinson beat Mary Youngblood and Katherine Cheatham 8-0; Caroline Rogers and Amy Peek lost to Alexis Seward and Emily Backes 6-8; and Emily Casteel and Carson Singletary lost to Katy Shipman and Ashley Dickert 0-6.
Christian Edwards and Russ DeMott won over Tyler Armstrong and Rodney Luker 6-0; Trey Jones and John Barber lost to Zack Soubanouder and Tyler Dasher 6-8; Dylan Underwood and Jacob Tompkins defeated Daniel Temples and Devin Thompson 8-1; and Jonathan Cauthen and Lee Veasey lost to Tyler Armstrong and Rodney Luker 4-6.
The middle school tennis team will play at Hahira at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The next home match is March 18 against Coffee.
