For March 8

Protection

“I would like to know what law enforcement and the Board of Education are doing to protect our kids at school. There was a lock-down at Willie J. Williams on Wednesday because of a gun.

“Evidently the sheriff’s officers that stand at the gate are not working. Why don’t the schools have the same type of metal detectors put at the schools for the kids to walk through like they have at the courtroom.

“At least it would alert the officers to check the kid if it goes off. Our children need better protection.”

Get the facts

“In response to “get over it”, in the March 5 Rant and Rave, get the facts before you speak. Try logging on to www.windsofvalor.com/reenactors/confederate.htm and this will at least give you an idea as to the regions that re-enactors live in. Many of my fellow Confederate re-enactors are from the North. Re-enacting is not a redneck thing. It is a history thing.”

You are wrong

“The other ranter is wrong. There are re-enactments of the Little Bighorn, and Custer’s infamous massacre, but there are none of the Indian uprisings in Minnesota that killed more than 600 white people (including babies) nor the massacre of Olive Oatman’s entire family in Arizona — clubbed to death by Indians in front of her young eyes — that I’ve ever heard of.”

Not Biblical

“To say that God has no chosen people is not Biblical. You should not reject that which you do not understand, ignore that which you cannot explain, nor mould God to fit the image you have of Him. Better to pray and study to show thy self approved.”

The motive?

“Some 60,000 more troops are headed to the Gulf region. Anyone think that we are still after Iraq to disarm or is it war again?”

Yes, I disagree

“Mr. Taylor, you are right in saying some will disagree with you on the rebel banner. A crusade against slavery was begun early in the nation’s history by strong Christians who saw slavery as evil.

“The Constitution compromised on the issue by banning the importation of slaves, but with enforcement delayed until 1808.

“All northern states had outlawed slavery by 1804. Southern plantation owners found slavery profitable, and they had victories on the issue while they were still under the American flag. Eventually the break came with the outbreak of war in 1861.

“No, the slaves didn’t join in the Confederate cause. It’s ludicrous to think of black Confederates galloping into battle against the Union soldiers while waving their sabers and shouting, ‘Down with freedom — save our slave heritage.'”

It’s that time

“Well, baseball season is upon us. When do we start hearing about the coaching, who’s sitting on the bench, who should be playing and how greatly unfair everything is.

“I just can’t wait to hear from all the Little League moms who are overnight experts on the subject and who would rewrite the whole process.”
