MOULTRIE — Former Colquitt County High soccer player Will Phillips got his feet wet at the college level last fall playing for Thomas University.

The Nighthawks went 4-10-2 under second-year coach Ricky Zambrano.

Phillips, who graduated last May, was a four-year member of the Colquitt County High soccer team, starting on defense for the Packers.

Of this and that:

• The Colquitt County junior varsity boys basketball team defeated Thomas County Central 50-40 on Tuesday in Thomasville.

Channing Hudson and Eugene Wood led the junior varsity Packers with 10 points each. Duke Banks and Ryshawn Melvin each had eight, Nathan Cashwell had six and Chanting Stevenson and Nolan White chipped in four each.

• The Colquitt County middle school wrestling team split a pair of matches on Tuesday in Fitzgerald.

The middle school Packers fell to Turner County 44-24, despite getting pins from Jacob Hall, Blake Segers and Beau Weathers and decisions from Jesse Goff and Michael Welch.

Colquitt County defeated Ben Hill Middle School 39-30. The Packers got pins from Chris Mitchell, Bryce Giddens and Chris Walsh and decisions from Hall, Weathers, Welch, Carlton Brooks and Myles Thompson. Tyler Dismuke won on an injury forfeit.

With his pin, Walsh raised his record to 12-0 this season.

The middle schoolers will be at Tift County on Friday.

• The Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team raised its record to 5-6 with a 74-60 victory over Paine College on Dec. 31.

The Lady Golden Bulls, coached by Colquitt County Hall of Famer Vanessa Taylor, will meet Virginia Union at home on Jan. 7.

• The Coffee High girls and boys basketball teams got their Region 1-AAAAA schedules off to the right start on Tuesday, sweeping Valdosta.

The Lady Trojans defeated the Valdosta girls 48-35. The Lady Wildcats are playing under first-year coach Julie McCutcheon.

The Coffee boys completed the sweep with a 56-52 victory over the Wildcats, who have just one player with varsity experience this season.

The Coffee boys join Lowndes with 1-0 records to sit atop the region standings. Valdosta and Houston County are 0-1. Tift County and Colquitt County will play their region openers on Friday.

Three Region 1-AAAAA boys teams have new coaches: Johnny Spurlin at Tift County, Kingston Clark at Lowndes and Kirven Davis at Colquitt County.

Clark has led the Vikings to a 9-1 record in the early going.

The Houston County and Coffee girls are each 1-0 in the region. Valdosta and Lowndes are 0-1.

The Lowndes girls, under Shan Garner, are 13-2 despite their region loss to Houston back on Dec. 16. Tift County’s girls are 10-3.

On Friday, Houston will be at Colquitt, Lowndes will travel to Coffee and Valdosta will be at Tift.

The only game between region opponents on Saturday will be at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium, where Colquitt County will play host to Valdosta.

Also on Saturday, Lowndes will be at Brooks County, Tift County will travel to Cook and Houston County will entertain Warner Robins.

Coffee will be off.
