MOULTRIE — The Battle of the South adult basketball tournament, held each year in the second week of July in Albany, draws as many as 30 teams and large crowds.

Colquitt County High basketball coach Kirven Davis has organized a similar tournament to be played in Moultrie this weekend and hopes it will become as large and popular as the one in Albany.

The first Colqutt County Adult Basketball Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium and the year-old gymnasium at C.A. Gray Middle School.

The tournament has drawn 14 teams, including three from Colquitt County and another that Davis and brother Marquis play on.

There is no admission charge to the games.

The tournament will open at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Espy Gymnasium with Colquitt County’s Sanderson Farms meet the team from Columbus.

The next game, featuring Faith and Prayer of Albany against the Mad Hatters, begins at 10 a.m.

At 9 a.m. at the C.A. Gray gymnasium, Colquitt County’s Simply Basketball, which features Darius Dawson and Dextra Polite, against Cougars, also from Columbus.

Sylvester meets the Bearcats of Albany at 10 am. at Gray. The Franchise of Albany plays Colquitt County’s Hot Boyz at 11 a.m. at Gray. The Hot Boyz are led by former Packer Roscoe Singletary.

At 1 p.m. at Gray, the Franchise-Hot Boyz winners play J.L. Litman of Albany, which features for University of Florida star and National Basketball League player Donnell Harvey.

The Faith and Prayer-Mad Hatters winners meet Liberty County at 1 p.m. at the Espy Gym.

The Sanderson Farms-Columbus winner meets Albany’s Mt. Zion, which includes Kirven and Marquis Davis and former University of Georgia guard Pertha Robinson.

The championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at the Espy Gym.

Davis said the teams play a regular circuit during the summer, primarily playing in each team’s tournament.

Proceeds from the entry fees to the tournament will go to help fund the trip that the Colquitt County High basketball team will make in December to take part in a holiday basketball tournament in Bowling Green, Ky.
