Lawn mower racing draws 75 to Berlin

BERLIN — The inaugural Amudsen Research Corp. (ARC) Racing STA-BIL Winter National Lawn Mower Races was held Sunday at Roy Davis Memorial Park in Berlin Sunday. The races were part of a two-day national racing event held in Berlin and in Jacksonville, Fla.
The STA-BIL Winter Nationals featured sod-slinging action on riding lawn mowers with cutting blades removed. The lawn mowers were divided into six classes, and the lawnmowers were capable of reaching speeds of 60 mph.
Lawn mower racers from across the Southeast and across the country converged on Berlin to compete in the races. Riders competed from as far away as Maine, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, New Jersey, Maryland, California and Illinois.
Winners in each class were:
• IMOW Main: Kenton Gibson of Florida – 1st Place, Craig Pond of Michigan – 2nd Place, and Herb Mason of Valdosta – 3rd Place;
• A/P Main: Pat Sullivan of Florida – 1st Place, Janet Witt of Florida – 2nd Place, and Manuel Torres of California – 3rd Place;
• S/P Main: Troy Larson of Wisconsin – 1st Place, Chris Violette of Florida – 2nd Place, and Keith Hiller of Michigan – 3rd Place;
• Stock Main: Carolyn Blair of Florida – 1st Place, Vernon Downs of Quitman – 2nd Place, and Herb Mason of Valdosta – 3rd Place;
• B/P Main: Bobby Cleveland of Locust Grove – 1st Place, Jayson Mikula of Michigan – 2nd Place, and Torn Ast of Florida – 3rd Place, and;
• F/X Main: Mike Miller of Wisconsin – 1st Place, Chuck Miller of Ohio – 2nd Place, and Chris Violette of Florida – 3rd Place.
Roy Davis Memorial Park is home to the Georgia Lawn Mower Racing Association (GLMRA), and the association is one of 20 local chapters of the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association (USLMRA). More information can be found about USLMRA by calling 847-729-7363 or visiting their Web site at www.letsmow.com.
The park in Berlin will host GLMRA local chapter lawn mower races on Saturday, Feb. 18, and again on Saturday, March 18, before hosting the Second Annual Southern Invitational on Saturday, April 22. The park is located at 200 Everette Godfrey Sr. Drive in Berlin, just off of Highway 133.
