Sharks third in Thomasville

MOULTRIE — Despite having just 12 of its team members compete, the Moultrie Sharks swim team finished third overall at the 2006 South Georgia Winter Meet held Saturday in Thomasville.

The Moultrie girls, led Kelcie Gilmore, placed third. The boys team, with Austin Vines and Connor Walsh taking first overall in their age groups, were fourth.

The meet drew seven teams, with the Albany YMCA Swim Team taking first place with 511 points, followed by the Bainbridge Extreme YMCA team, with had 368 points.

The Sharks had 313 points, edging the Thomasville Riptide YMCA team, which had 310 points for fourth place.

The Waycross YMCA was fifth, followed by the Douglas YMCA and St. Simons Swim Team.

Coach Pierre Rogers said the had its best meet of the season.

“Our team turned in some great individual swims,” said Rogers said. “Every swimmer had at least one personal best time. Heather Golberman swam in her first meet and did a great job.”

Vines finished first in each of the five event he entered for 40 points and first place in the 9-10 boys age group, which included eight swimmers. He won the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter individual medley, 50-meter backstroke, 50-meter butterfly and 100-meter freestyle.

Gilmore and Walsh scored 39 out of a possible 40 points to take first place in their age groups.

Walsh, swimming in the boys 11-12 age group, was first in the 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter breaststroke, 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter freestyle events. He was second in the 50-meter butterfly and outpointed Tyler Mett of Douglas by a point.

Gilmore, swimming the 14-girl 11-12 age group, was first in the 50-meter freestyle, 200-meter individual medley, 50-meter backstroke and 100-meter freestyle. She was second in the 50-meter butterfly.

She took first place by one point over St. Simons’ Carlie Ward.

Ansley Moore finished tied for second in the 9-10 girls age group with 34 points. She was second in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter individual medley, 50-meter backstroke and 100-meter freestyle. She was third in the 50-meter butterfly.

The top three finishers in each age group received high point trophies.

The girls 13-14 200-meter medley relay team of Staci Repass, Kelcie Gilmore, Haley Goodman and Sara Jenkins turned in a first-place finish.

The girls 11-12 200-meter freestyle relay team of Kelcie Gilmore, Staci Repass, Ansley Moore and Savannah Kissell was second.

Turning in fourth-place finishes were Sarah Gibson, 6-and-under; Sara Jenkins, 13-14; and Sully Pollard, 13-14.

Also for the Sharks, Linzee Rehberg was fifth in 7-8; Savannah Kissell was ninth in 9-10; Staci Repass was ninth and Haley Goodman was 10th in 11-12.
