Colquitt sweeps Dougherty in soccer

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County soccer teams had to travel to Albany on Wednesday for what turned out to be a glorified practice session for both.

On a muddy field, the Packers defeated Dougherty’s boys 15-0.

The Lady Packers followed with an 8-0 victory.

Competition is expected to be much tougher when the Colquitt County soccer teams travel to Northside-Warner Robins on Friday.

The Colquitt County boys victory raised their record to 2-3 and the Packers got to have a little fun after a tough 1-0 Region 1-AAAAA loss to Valdosta at home on Tuesday.

The Packers got three goals from Colby Browning and two each from Spencer Clayton, Daniel Garcia and Tyler Mobley.

Trey Brooks, D.J. Vanzant, Beau Holden, Dago Cisneros, Nathan Fowler and Hudson Wrenn had single goals.

Packers coach Randall Balch gave goal keeper Michael Murray the night off and Seth Chitty got to work the entire 80 minutes in the nets.

“We got a chance to put some people in different positions and work on our passing, chipping and crossing,” Balch said. “We were able to get some confidence back that when we play well, good things will happen.”

The Lady Packers’ victory was their fourth in a row since a season-opening 3-1 loss to Warner Robins.

Like Browning in the boys game, Sha Wetherington got the hat trick, scoring three goals. Alba Hernandez and Heather Tillman each had two goals and Whitney Hood had one.

Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis echoed Balch’s assessment of the field condition.

“It was horrible,” said Jarvis, who had his team go through a drill at halftime aimed keeping the ball down.

Dougherty had just one shot on goal and crossed into Colquitt County territory just four times.

“We didn’t play the best we ever have,” Jarvis said. “Dougherty was not very skilled, but they were big and they got in the way.

“But I will say this for them. They never gave up.”
