Moore wants strong meet for Piemonte

MOULTRIE — For a number of reasons, Hannah Moore has been aiming at having a strong performance at the Summer East Championships, which begin today at the Moose Moss Aquatics Center.
Last year, one distastrous dive on 1-meter kept her from qualifying on all three boards for Junior Nationals.
And with several college coaches on the pool deck over the next four days, the rising Colquitt County High senior would like to continue to dive as one of the nation’s top performers in the girls 16-18 age group.
But, perhaps just as important, she would like to give coach Ron Piemonte something good to remember her by.
It is no secret that Moore has enjoyed a strong relationship over the last five years with Piemonte, who is coaching the Moss Farms team for the last time this week before taking over as the head coach at Virginia Tech.
“He’s my favorite coach in the world,” said Moore after a practice session on Wednesday. “We’re real close. I can talk about anything with him.
“He’s kind of like my daddy.”
Their relationship is so close that the University of Georgia, where Moore had long wanted to go to continue her diving career, may no longer be her first choice.
With Piemonte heading to Virginia Tech, Moore is seriously considering joining her coach there.
But Georgia is still on the list. Kansas and Alabama have contacted her. She is expected to talk to Auburn this week.
“I’ll have to make some trips,” she said.
But there is plenty of time to make that decision.
Right now, Moore is concentrating on finishing in the top 12 in her three events this week and qualifying for Junior Nationals, where she had three top-10 finishes last year, her first in the 16-18 age group.
After getting to compete on 1-meter as an alternate, she finished sixth in that event.
She also was eighth on platform and 10th on 3-meter.
Moore has battled what she suspects is food poisoning for several days and was not pleased with workout session on Wednesday.
But before then, she had been having an outstanding summer season.
The three-time high school All-American won the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions and was second on platform at the Moose Moss Invitational and was third on both 3-meter and platform and was fifth on 1-meter at the Regional competition in Orlando.
“I’ve just been trying to do my dives more correctly,” Moore said. “And I’ve learned a front 3 1/2 on 10-meter. That boosted my DD (degree of difficulty) a lot.
“As long as I get in the top 12, I don’t care what place I get. But I really want to have a good meet. It’s my last one with Ron.”
