MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls and boys basketball teams each lost three starters from the their 2005-2006 teams and they will begin the process of finding replacements with a summer schedule of camps, leagues and other practices.

The Colquitt County girls are coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history.

Coach Joe Parker’s Lady Packers went 21-10 and advanced to the state quarterfinals, coming up just one win short of the Final Four when they were defeated by Redan 59-48 in overtime.

The Colquitt girls were ranked No. 6 in the final Class AAAAA poll, but will head into next season without three prime contributors.

Starters Ashley Stafford, Dorothy Strong and Jessica Lemus have graduated, and Stafford will continue to play at Columbus State and Strong at Darton College.

Parker will have returning starters Taquella Coates and Nikki Hudson and part-time starter Nicole Thomas back this fall, but still has jobs up for grabs.

The Lady Packers will have three days of practice this week under their belt before heading to Albany to play in the Darton team camp on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

The following week, Parker will take his team across the state line to participate in the Auburn team camp on June 11-14.

After a day off, the Lady Packers will go to the Valdosta State team camp.

Colquitt’s girls also will go the University of North Florida team camp in Jacksonville on June 23-25.

Kirven Davis was named the Colquitt County boys coach last June following the resignation of Keith Hall and had to learn his players during summer workouts.

Davis is better acquainted with the program this summer after leading his first Packers team to a 14-14 record and a berth in the state tournament.

But seven seniors from the 2005-2006 team — Kamari Peterson, Ronald Wilson, James Trimble, Jeremy DeBruce, Antwan Tuff, Amar Parikh and Corey Goss — are gone.

Trimble and Tuff were All-Region players. Trimble is going to Abraham Baldwin College to continue his playing career. DeBruce will get a chance to play at Davis’ alma mater, Albany State.

The only returning starters will be Orion Ponder and Andrew Wallace.

To help prepare younger players to try to earn one of the three open spots, Davis has put together a summer schedule that includes some 40 games.

“That was the plan,” Davis said. “We are so green.”

Colquitt’s boys will begin the competitive summer season today when they head to Tifton for the three-day Abraham Baldwin College camp.

The Packers will play two games each day, meeting Clinch County and Worth County today; Lee County and Thomasville on Friday; and Tift County and Lowndes on Saturday.

Colquitt will participate in the 15th annual SOWEGA Summer League on June 8-10.

The Packers will meet Dougherty at 3 p.m. and Cairo at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, Dougherty High.

The following day, Colquitt will meet Randolph-Clay at 4:30 p.m. and Westover at 7:30 p.m. at the Westover High gymnasium.

On Saturday, June 10, Colquitt Count y will face Tri-County at 11:30 p.m. and Terrell County at 2:30 p.m. at the Dougherty High gymnasium.

On June 13-15, Colquitt County will play host to its own camp at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium.

Teams from Atkinson County, Lee County, Westover, Monroe, Lowndes and Turner County will participate, as will two teams from Colquitt County.

Each team will play two games a day.

The Packers will go to Tallahassee for the Leonard Hamilton Florida State basketball camp, which will run June 18-21.

Two days later, Davis will return home with his team as it participates in the Albany State camp.

Davis and assistant coach Jared Garner will hold the Colquitt County High School Packer Power Basketball Camp for boys in grades 5 through 8 on July 10-14.

The camp will be held from 9 a.m.-noon each day with drills scheduled for the first two hours and games from 11 a.m.-noon.

Campers will be divided into age and skill groups.

The cost is $50.
