MOULTRIE — The five seniors on the Colquitt County boys soccer team will be playing their final match at Mack Tharpe Stadium at Tom White Field when they play host to Coffee High at 7:30 tonight.
The four Colquitt County girls seniors could play at home again, but the Lady Packers will need to finish either first or second in the final Region 1-AAAAA standings to host a first-round playoff match.
And beating the Lady Trojans in the match that starts at 5:30 tonight will be the first step toward securing a No. 2 finish in the region.
The Colquitt County girls are 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the region standings. Tift County, unbeaten in six region starts, has the region lead, but the Lady Packers would like to at least hold on to No. 2 and play host to a first-round state playoff match on April 27.
“We have a great opportunity to do it,” Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis said. “Coffee is a must-win for us.”
The Colquitt County girls had little trouble with the Lady Trojans when the two teams met on March 10 in Douglas, winning 8-0.
“If we’ll just play our game, I can see no reason why we can’t claim No. 2,” Jarvis said.
Colquitt County’s girls are led in scoring by freshman Alba Hernandez, who has 22 goals, but the five Lady Packers seniors are likely to play key roles as the team finishes its season against Coffee tonight and at Houston County on April 18 and at Tift County on April 21.
In addition to girls soccer team managers Caroline Whitfield, Anne Kathryn Stone and Jordan Croft, senior players Kaitlyn Price, Whitney Hood, Sha Wetherington and Maria Bautista will be honored between the girls and boys matches tonight.
All four have played prominent roles for the Lady Packers.
Price has been one of the region’s top goalkeepers the last two seasons.
Hood has used her speed and quickness to good advantage and has scored 11 goals this season.
Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis says Bautista “has really come on strong for us as a defender this year.”
Wetherington again is one of the top players in the region and is second on the team with 12 goals. She also has been called on to play defense.
“She’s just an outstanding player,” Jarvis said. “Whoever we play always wants to know, ‘Who is No. 7?’
“And she can play anywhere she’s needed.”
The boys soccer team will bid farewell to Michael Murray, Jesus Mundo, Joe Rodriquez, Brian Adams and Josh Williams.
The Packers will need some big contributions from those senior as they try to secure a playoff berth.
The Colquitt County boys currently are in fourth place in the region with a 2-5 record and could help their cause immensely with a victory over 2-6 Coffee tonight.
“It’s pretty much do-or-die for us,” Packers coach Randall Balch said. “We beat them 2-1 already, so they will be coming in with a mission.
“They’ll be looking for revenge.”
The Packers have lost five in a row since that win over Coffee and, with matches against Houston County and Tift County remaining, cannot afford many more missteps.
Balch said the team practiced three times during the spring break and concentrated on offense.
“We worked on trying to put us in position to score,” Balch said. “We’ve playing all right on defense, we’ve just been having trouble putting the ball in the net.”
During the five-game losing streak, the Packers were outscored 21-4.
