MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High boys soccer team held its playoff hopes for more than 78 minutes on Friday in Tifton.

The Packers needed a road victory over Tift County to clinch Region 1-AAAAA’s No. 4 berth, but the lack of offense that had bedeviled them all season came back to haunt them once again.

The Blue Devils got a goal by Justin Gartman with 1:53 remaining in the match to take a 1-0 victory and claim the playoff spot.

The Packers will be home for the playoffs for the second year in a row.

The Packers scored just nine goals in their 10 Region 1-AAAAA matches and were unable to give themselves a chance at the playoffs on Friday.

Colquitt finishes the season 6-11 overall and 3-7 in the region.

The six victories are twice what the 2005 team managed when it went 3-12-3.

Houston County’s boys won the Region 1-AAAAA championship. Valdosta will be No. 2. Lowndes will go the playoffs as the No. 3 team.

The Colquitt County girls team will head out on the road for its first-round playoff match after finishing third in Region 1-AAAAA.

The Lady Packers will meet the No. 2 team from Region 2-AAAAA on Thursday.

The Lady Packers finished the regular season with a 12-5 overall record and a 6-4 region record after Friday’s 6-2 loss to the Lady Devils.

Tift County’s girls completed the Region 1-AAAAA season undefeated and will play host to the No. 4 team from Region 2-AAAAA in the first round of the state playoffs.

Among its 10 region victories were 6-0 and 6-2 decisions over the Lady Packers.

Tift County jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead on Friday.

It was her 27th goal of the season.
