MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys soccer team was unable to match the intensity it displayed in Tuesday’s big Region 1-AAAAA victory at Lowndes, but the Packers had enough to knock off Coffee 2-1 after a long Friday bus trip to Douglas.

The victory completed a sweep that began with an 8-0 victory by the Colquitt County girls team.

The victory by the boys team get the Packers up over the .500 mark at 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the Region 1-AAAAA standings.

After a 1-3 start, the Packers have won four of their last five.

The last two have been especially important, coming against region opponents.

On Tuesday, the Packers defeated Lowndes at Martin Stadium for the first time since 1999.

That, too, was by a 2-1 score.

“We’re playing pretty good now,” said assistant coach Rob Craft. “We’ve just got to keep getting better.”

Matt DeMott scored the two deciding goals against Lowndes on Tuesday and got the game-winner against the Trojans on Friday as well.

The Packers jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Spencer Clayton goal off an assist by Daniel Garcia in the 18th minute.

Then, just seven minutes into the second half, DeMott fired an indirect kick into the net from 25 yards out to give the Packers a two-goal cushion.

Clayton now has a team-leading seven goals for the Packers. DeMott now has four.

Coffee scored on a corner kick in the closing moments, but the Packers held on.

Coffee’s boys fall to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in Region 1-AAAAA.

The Packers will return to Mack Tharpe Stadium at Tom White Field to meet Tift County at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Blue Devils are 1-6-1 overall and are 0-3 in the Region 1-AAAAA standings.

The Lady Packers victory was their eighth in a row since opening the season with a 3-1 loss to Warner Robins.

And they did it in dominating style, outshooting their hosts 18-3 and dropping the Lady Trojans to 0-7 overall this season, 0-5 in the region.

The game was unusual in that, for the first time this season, freshman Alba Hernandez did not score a goal.

But while the Lady Trojans were able to silence Hernandez, who had 15 goals in the Lady Packers first eight matches, they could not contain senior Sha Wetheringon, who got the hat trick with three goals.

Kristin Hall gave the Lady Packers a 1-0 lead when she scored her fifth goal of the season with 30:25 left in the first half.

Wetherington followed with her first of the night at the 26:38 mark.

Just 18 seconds later, Sarah Tyndall scored her third goal of the season and the Lady Packers were up 3-0. Hall got the assist.

Wetherington got her second of night and freshman Abbey Taylor got her second of the varsity season before halftime.

Taylor assisted on Wetherington’s second goal. Whitney Hood was credited with the assist on Taylor’s goal.

Wetherington collected her third goal of the night — and 10th of the season — with 29:56 left in the match.

Whitney Hood scored the seventh and eighth goals of the night — and her third and fourth of the season — in the final 13 minutes.

Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis said his team’s defense was so strong, especially in the first half, “that (goalkeeper) Kaitlyn (Price) could have been sitting on a bucket back there.”

And while Hernandez did not score, “she played very, very unselfishly tonight. She was involved in everything that happened up top.”

Colquitt will meet the Tift County girls, 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the region, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.
