Tennis teams advance in Bainbridge

MOULTRIE — It will be chilly for tennis, but the Colquitt County tennis teams will be back in action in the Bainbridge Rotary Tennis Tournament this morning, with the Lady Packers playing for the championship and the Packers aiming at third place.

Colquitt’s girls defeated Thomasville and Thomas County Central by 4-1 scores to advance to today’s 10 a.m. championship match against Bainbridge.

Against Thomasville, Colquitt County’s Lindsay Jacobs was challenged in her match at No. 1 singles, but prevailed over Kristin Gee, 1-6, 6-3 and 11-9 in the third set tie-break.

At No. 2 singles, Landi Clark fell to Sarah Rice 7-5, 5-7, 9-11.

Monique Murphy, playing No. 3 singles, was on the court and off in a hurry, defeating Jessica Oglesby 6-0, 6-0.

The two doubles teams won in straight sets.

At No. 1, Gracie Qurnell and Anne Yearta won over Catherine Hardy and Sarah Hardy 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 2 doubles, Jessica Harvin and Savanna Lamon defeated Frances Lilly and Laura Fletcher 6-1, 6-4.

In the match against Thomas County Central, Jacobs had little trouble with the Lady Jackets No. 1, Elisha Shaw, winning 6-0, 6-0.

Clark fell at No. 2 to Grace Bunnidge 6-2, 2-6, 1-10. Murphy won at No. 3 over Ivy Robinson 6-4, 6-2.

Yearta and Qurnell won over Morgan Malone and Maude Vadurwatt, 6-3, 6-3.

And Harvin and Lamon won at No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-3.

The Lady Packers are now 12-3.

Colquitt’s boys ran into a much-improve Thomasville High team in their first match of the tournament and fell 0-5.

“We didn’t play very well, but Thomasville is very, very good,” Packers coach Grant Hammack said.

At No. 1 singles, Austin York los to Victory McMillen 0-6, 1-6.

At No. 2 singles, Zach Owen fell to Chase Parker 0-6, 0-6.

And at No. 3 singles, Shaun Soderstrom fell to Todd Silvis 0-6, 0-6.

The Packers No. 1 doubles team of Bradley Michie and Chris Harvin lost to Sherrod Monk and Thomas McMilen 1-6, 1-6.

Tanner Vereen and Barclay Mitchell played No. 2 doubles against Bradley Bassett and Chris Park and lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-10.

But the Packers won 4-1 against Thomas County Central and will play either Lee County or Tift County for third place when play resumes at 9:30 this morning.

Colquitt lost only at No. 1 singles where York fell to Brian Smith 3-6, 3-6. Owen won over Matt Fletcher 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

Shaun Soderstrom won his No. 3 singles match against Michael Prevatt 6-0, 6-3.

At No. 1 doubles, Michie and Harvin won over Aaron Groven and Adrian Knight 6-1, 6-1.

Zach Clifton and Barclay Mitchell played at No. 2 doubles and won over Henry Tennebrood an Harrison Hughes, 6-1, 6-2.
