MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school soccer teams made their trip to Tifton for their season finales on Wednesday a successful one.

The Lady Packers won 3-1 to finish unbeaten at 9-0-3.

And middle school boys avenged the program’s only loss in four seasons by shutting out the Tift County boys 3-0.

The teams were late returning to Moultrie when the bus in which they were riding was struck by a car while still in Tifton. No one in the bus or the car was injured.

The Colquitt County girls fell behind quickly when Tift County scored in the eighth minute to go up 1-0.

But the Lady Packers defense shut the Lady Devils down the rest of the way.

Colquitt tied the match in the 18th minutes when Laci Webb got the ball in close to Lauren Kelshaw, who put it in the net.

Five minutes later, Carly Banks took the ball at midfield and, with two Tift County defenders chasing her, dribbled it to the net where she out-maneuvered the keeper and slipped into the net for a 2-1 Colquitt County lead.

Kelshaw added a second goal in the second half to make it a 3-1 final.

Kelshaw finished with seven goals for the season. Banks had six.

Suzi Hernandez led the team with eight goals. Lindsay Causey also had seven and Jordan Hammack also had six.

“Our girls play so tough and so strong the whole game,” said Colquitt County girls coach Ashley Hill. “Even when we got behind early, we did not give up and we stayed focused.”

Hill said he named his team’s eight-graders as captains for the match.

“I hate to see the season end and I hate to see the eighth-graders go,” he said. “This team played so well together.”

The middle school boys soccer program’s only loss in four seasons came by a 2-0 score to Tift County at Mack Tharpe Stadium at Tom White Field last week.

The Packers got their revenge in Tifton on Wednesday, getting a pair of goals from Brett Holden and a penalty kick from Josue Mundo and using a shutdown defense.

Coach Keith Summerlin said he told his team to put the past behind it, but also “to remember how bad it feels to lose.”

“I told them that the team that hustles most will come out with the win,” Summerlin said. “And they responded.”

Colquitt kept the ball in the Tift County end of the field most of the first half and finally cashed in when Holden took a loose ball just inside the 18 and rolled it just past the keeper inside the far post for a 1-0 lead only seconds before the end of the half.

It took until the 48th minute for the Packers to score again. It came on a cross from Josue Mundo to Holden, who got a right foot on it and put it into the net.

Thirty seconds later, Gustavo Zapote was tackled from behind on a breakaway and had to leave the game. Mundo came on for the penalty kick and blasted it in with just seconds left in the match.

“I was real proud of the way we played,” Summerlin said.

The Packers finish 9-1-2.

Zapote and Holden were the team’s leading scorers with six goals each.
