MOULTRIE — The winds were unpredictable at Sunset Country Club on Friday for the first round of the 51st Pot o’ Gold Pro-Am, but they didn’t bother Cole McInnis on the front nine.
McInnis, an amateur playing for the Willow Point Golf and Country Club foursome, had a 43 on the back nine and a 29 on the front nine — including a double-eagle on No. 9— to help send his team to a first-round leading 60.
The foursome from Willow Point, a club located on Lake Martin, Ala., led by golf professional Steve Lyles, leads by just one stroke over the teams from Marietta County Club and Wilmington Island Club. Six teams are another shot back at 62.
The Sunset Country Club A team led by Bob Windom carded a 64 and is tied with three other foursomes.
The Sunset B team is another shot back.
Chicopee Woods’ Greg Lee shot a 67 for the low professional lead by two strokes over Cartersville’s Scott Hamilton, Glen Arven’s Bill Connally and Wilmington Island’s Patrick Richardson.
Cairo’s Glen Herrell and Carolinas’ Jeff Peck are another stroke back at 70.
Marietta’s Jonathan Cox, who won Thursday’s long drive competition, has the low score among the amateurs, a 5-under 67.
Bobby Brent Jr. of Columbus Country Club is two shots back at 69. Five golfers are tied at 70.
Windom said the winds were worst around noon and definitely affected scores.
“There was a two-club wind out there at times,” he said.
Windom said his teams “let some opportunities slip by us, but we’re still in pretty good shape.
“We never got in any trouble, but we had some opportunities that just didn’t fall. We just want to be close going into the next day and have a chance.”
Windom shot a 73 in his first Pot o’ Gold representing the club where he learned to play the game.
His A team got a 73 from Jon Ladson, a 76 from Ernie Venet and a 77 from Chad Eunice.
The best score of the day by a Sunset player was posted by B teamer Grady Clements, who shot a 72.
“Grady hit the ball real well,” Windom said. “Sometimes he just couldn’t get the ball in the hole.”
Andy Blanton and Pax Clark each had a 74.
The defending Pot o’ Gold Pro-Am champion Valdosta Country Club team also turned in a 65 on Friday.
Willow Point had McInnis’s 72, a 73 by Will Swift and an 81 by Troy Maxwell. Lyles had an 84.
Just being one shot out leaves the Marietta team in good shape.
Marietta professional Stephen Keppler has won eight Pot o’ Gold titles and is just four strokes off the low professional lead.
Also playing for Marietta are Cox, Hap Fleming, who had a 74 on Friday, and Randy Donahoo, who had a 77.
Other local players and their scores include Harris English, 73; Kevin Blanton, 74; Zess Willis, 74; Ben Fuller, 77; Darin Bentz, 77 and Ben English, 78.
