MOULTRIE — The streak was bound to end some time.
The Colquitt County middle school boys soccer team’s unbeaten streak, which dated back to 2003, finally ended on Wednesday when Tift County dealt the youngest Packers a 2-0 defeat at Mack Tharpe Stadium at Tom White Field.
While the middle school boys streak was ending, the Colquitt County middle school girls remain unbeaten this season, defeating Tift County 3-1 in Wednesday’s first match.
Colquitt County started middle school soccer in 2002 when the co-ed team went 8-0.
Separate boys and girls teams have played the last three seasons.
Heading into Wednesday’s match, the Colquitt County boys had compiled a combined record of 29-0-6, including a 7-0-1 record this season.
But Tift County scored one goal in each half and a smothering defense held the Packers scoreless.
Colquitt County coach Keith Summerlin gave Tift County plenty of credit.
“They played some defense,” Summerlin. “They are a good team and well-coached.”
Colquitt County’s lack of size up front hurt against the bigger Blue Devil defense.
“I felt like we were getting knocked around up front,” Summerlin said. “It was a defensive kind of game. And they cracked our defense for a couple of goals.
Summerlin said the loss was the first a number of his players had ever suffered.
“I don’t think we played well as a team,” Summerlin said. “We had some good individual efforts, but we didn’t play as well as we have.”
Colquitt County was playing for the second time in as many days. But boys team will get a chance to avenge the loss when it travels to Tifton to meet the Blue Devils next Wednesday in the final match of the season.
The Colquitt County middle school teams also will play host to Lowndes and Hahira on Saturday.
“We’ve still got a chance to redeem ourselves,” Summerlin said.
The Colquitt County girls scored all three of their goals in the first half and held off the Lady Devils and raise their record to 7-0-2.
Lori Sherling scored two goals and Carly Banks converted a penalty kick to give the Lady Packers a two-goal lead.
And Colquitt County defense, led by Rebecca Clark, Morgan Hayes and Karlie Brown, held Tift County in check in the second half.
“The defense played exceptionally well,” Colquitt County girls coach Ashley Hill said. “They did a good job getting the ball to the midfield and the midfield did a good job getting it to the forwards.”
The Lady Packers now have won two more matches than did the 2005 team, which finished 5-4. Colquitt lost twice to Tift County last season, including one by a 5-0 score.
The win was the second in as many days for the middle school girls.
After a 1-1 tie with Lee County on March 8, the middle school girls have won four in a row by a combined 15-3 score.
