Middle school wrestlers perform well

MOULTRIE — Six members of the Colquitt County middle school wrestling team took part in the USA Wrestling-sponsored Flint River Classic held on Jan. 20 at Lee County Middle School in Leesburg, and young Packer Juan DeLeon came back with a gold medal.
Two other middle school Packers had second-place finishes and another came in third.
The wrestlers competed as part of the Mat Hawgs Wrestling Club, which was competing for the first time.
Kevin Sumner is the coach of the Mat Hawgs. Travis Torbert coaches the Colquitt County middle school team, with assistance from Ken Hall.
Several other younger Mat Hawgs also took part in the meet.
DeLeon took first place in the tournament in the 135-pound schoolboy division.
Anderson Glenn and Jesse Goff each had second-place finishes.
Glenn took the silver medal in the 80-pound novice division.
Goff finished second in the 120-pound schoolboy division.
Jay Jones took a third-place finish in the 150-pound novice division.
Colquitt County middle school wrestlers Travis Register and Coleman Neal also took part in the meet, but didn’t place, although Neal was 2-2.
The middle school wrestling team will compete at the Pineland gymnasium for the last time this season today when it plays host to Thomas County Central at 4 p.m.
The middle school Packers will compete in the South Georgia Athletic Conference tournament, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lowndes.
