State tournaments open today

MOULTRIE — Five Colquitt County all-star teams will begin Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state tournament play this week, including pair of district champion baseball teams that open tonight.

The District III champion 12-and-under all-stars travel to Dublin to play their state tournament opener at 6 tonight against tournament host Dublin.

The 12-and-unders won the sub-District championship in Bainbridge, winning four straight by a combined 51-1. The all-stars then swept Crisp County 16-1 and 4-0 in the best-of-3 championship series in Bainbridge.

The 12-and-under all-stars include Matt Gerald, Preston Berry, Daren Kent, Andrew Eunice, Blake Bennett, Mack Hathcock, Clayton Brown, Ross Goforth, Jim Harrison, Andrew Carlton, Tyler Yost, Garrett Pearce and Aubrey McCarty.

The coaches are Chad Eunice, Bobby Eunice and Dale Friedlander.

The 14-and-under all-stars will go to Waycross, where they will open state play at 6 tonight against tournament host Ware County.

A win would send Colquitt County Pony Leaguers to a second-round game at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The 14-and-unders won the District III north championship, defeating its four opponents by a combined 47-1, then defeated Thomasville 11-1 and 7-3 in the championship series.

The team includes Zac Goodno, Payne Newsome, Mark Lindsey, Vann Pitts, Ryan Davis, Matt Creech, Daylon Connell, Stephen Moore, Cole Pitts, Hayden Kudela, Tyler Brown, Matt Lindsey and Blake Stamps.

The coaches are Robby Pitts, Chance Pitts and Shannon Dickerson.

Colquitt County’s two District III champion girls softball teams will begin state tournament play on Thursday.

The 10-and-under Heat will go to Lyons, where it will play tournament host Lyons at 6 p.m. Thursday.

A victory would send the Heat to an 11:15 a.m. Friday winners bracket game. The championship game is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. Saturday.

In the District III tournament, the Heat won four straight one-sided games — by scores of 29-1, 21-2, 13-1 and 10-2 — to earn the trip to Lyons.

The Heat, coached by Chris Tillman and Angie Davis, includes Abbi Beth Paulk, Ainsley Davis, Cheyenne Tillman, Kasie Ricks, Nikki Johnson, Jenna Pope, Hayli Spradley, Abbi Weeks, Shelby Rakestraw, Taylor Owens, Diana Durham, Jessie Burgess and Kerri Owens.

The 14-and-under District champion Blast will go to Brunswick in Glynn County on Thursday to take a shot at the state championship.

The Blast defeated Bainbridge 12-0, Cairo 6-2 and Tift County 17-8 to win the District III championship in Cairo.

The Blast, coached by Cliff Taylor, Melissa Green and Jim Blair, include Kaytlyne Jarvis, Bria Wallace, Kaley Clark, Christy Harper, Blanca Fuentes, Stephanie Blair, Kayla Gibson, Jordan Taylor, Ashlee Holt, Antionette Myers, Maiya Thompson, Tremayia Robinson and Makayli Crawford.

The 10-and-under boys state tournament will begin on Thursday at the Magnolia Sports Complex.

Colquitt County is the host team and will meet Wayne County at 4 p.m. Thursday. The championship game is scheduled for 10:50 a.m.Saturday.

Don Price is the coach of the 10-and-under all-stars. He is assisted by Tom Chatman, Wayne Bryant and John Robertson.

The team includes Ryan Chatman, Cole Bryant, Adam Merritt, Shawn Bonner, Tristan Frazier, Timothy Clay, Ryan Wallace, Kyle Ashley, Parker Hoes, Ryan Pipkin, Nick Nichols, Warren Funderburk and John Buck Eunice.
