Packers head to state track meet

MOULTRIE — Vance Cuff and Orion Ponder have qualified for the state track meet in individual events and also will run in Jefferson on the 4×100 relay team.
The finals of the Region 1-AAAAA meet were held at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany on Tuesday with Warner Robins breaking Colquitt County’s two-year grip on the region championship. Tift County finished second, followed by Coffee. The Packers were fourth, with Lowndes, Valdosta and Houston County taking the final three spots.
The top-two finishers in each event advance to the state meet, which will be held May 10-12 in Jefferson.
The Packers 4×100 team turned in a 42:18 to earn the trip to state.
Joining Ponder and Cuff on the team are B.J. Howard and Jarvis Lambright.
Cuff also qualified for state in two other events: the high jump, with jump of 6 feet even, and the 100 meters, with a second-place time of 10.82.
Ponder won the triple jump with a 45-8.
Packers track coach Dextra Polite said he expected Ponder, in the triple jump, and the 4×100 team to do well at the state meet.
Ponder just missed qualifying in the 200 meters, finishing third with a 22:06. He also was sixth in the long jump with a 21-2.
Carlos Charles also had a third-place finish in the 2 mile run, with a time of 11:04. Charles was fourth in the mile with a 5:12.
The Packers 4×400 team of Howard, Cuff, Dannie Hunt and Dontrell Johnson also just missed qualifying for state, finishing third with a 3:38.
Colquitt County’s No. 2 4×100 relay team also had a third-place finish with a 43:02. The team included Terry McDaniel, Mitchell Thompson, Eric Key and Dontrell Johnson.
Getting a fourth-place finish for the Packers was Alonzo Osby in the 800, with a 2:09.
Dannie Hunt was fifth in the triple jump with a 42-6 and Denzell Hunt was fifth in the shot put with a 42-8.
Dontrell Johnson was sixth in the high jump with a 5-8 and Kenneth Gee was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 44:02.
