Diamond Pack to face Coffee

MOULTRIE — As the Colquitt County High baseball team tries to scratch back into the Region 1-AAAAA race, the memory of a loss at home to Coffee must still be galling.
Colquitt led 3-1 when the Trojans came to bat in the top of seventh on March 30 at Ike Aultman Field at Packer Park.
The Packers were one strike away from from a win that would have them at 2-2 in the region standings.
But Coffee scored three two-out runs and went on to a 4-3 victory.
The Packers have won three of five region games — and two in a row — since then and are in a position to make a run at one of the league’s four playoff berths.
A win over Coffee in tonight’s 7 p.m. game in Douglas would be a substantial step, especially with just two region games remaining next week.
The Packers would even their region record with a win tonight and with victories at home next week over Lowndes and Tift County, Colquitt could be making postseason plans.
After losing 15-1 to Houston County at home on April 13, the Packers have won three of four and two in a row in the region and have begun to meld their pitching, hitting and fielding.
Colquitt defeated Valdosta 14-6 and Warner Robins 10-7 on the road last week and on Monday shut out Bainbridge 9-0.
The Packers could not hold a 6-1 lead and lost to Lee County on Tuesday, but there is much more on the line tonight.
Colquitt could send Andrew Wallace to the mound tonight.
The senior left-hander leads the Packers in innings pitched with 31 2/3 and strikeouts with 40 and has a 2.43 ERA.
He pitched the first three innings on Monday at home against Bainbridge, throwing just 38 pitches while striking out five, walking one and giving up just one hit.
The Packers had 10 hits against Bainbridge and nine against Lee County.
John Michael Harrison has swung the bat well this week with two hits against the Bearcats and three against the Trojans to raise his average to .353.
Matt Weaver, who had a home run in the first meeting with Coffee and another on Monday against Bainbridge, continues to lead the Packers in hitting with a .479 batting average.
The left-handed hitting pitcher/first baseman/outfielder leads the Packers with 33 runs batted in. He has 35 hits on the season.
Second baseman Carter Jones had two singles against Lee County and has his average at .438.
Blake Cato is hitting .415. Wallace is hitting .333 and is second on the team with 26 runs batted in.
In the other two region games tonight, Warner Robins will travel to Lowndes and Valdosta will go to Tift County.
