MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High baseball team has not won back-to-back games since defeating Oglethorpe County 16-1 and Cedar Shoals 7-0 back on March 2 in Athens.
A Region 1-AAAAA victory tonight at Warner Robins, coming on the heels of Tuesday’s big 14-6 win at Valdosta, would not only give the Packers a two-game winning streak, it would give their state playoff aspirations a huge boost.
The Packers are tied at 3-5 with both Warner Robins and Valdosta and with just three more region games remaining after tonight, a win over the Bears appears critical.
And combined with a Houston County victory over Valdosta, a Packers win would put both the Wildcats and the Demons in their rear view mirror.
Colquitt County has won two of its last three and has a 12-11 victory over Warner Robins in Moultrie on March 23.
The Demons are coming off an 11-1 loss to Houston County on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, facing the prospect of falling into the region cellar, the Packers pounded out 12 hits, including a tie-breaking three-run home run by Matt Weaver that gave the Packers a 5-2 lead.
John Michael Harrison and Carter Jones each had three hits in the win, which avenged a 12-9 loss to the Wildcats on March 20 in Moultrie.
“We came out ready to play,” said Packers coach Eric McCranie, whose team is 8-11 overall.
Also tonight, region-leading Lowndes, 6-1, will travel to meet Tift County. The Vikings are 14-5 overall and ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAA. The Blue Devils are 4-3 in the region and did not play a region game on Tuesday.
