Hayes on NCAA qualifying team

MOULTRIE — LSU freshman and former Packer Jamal Hayes is a member of the LSU 4×400 relay team that ran a season-best 3:06.09 to place second in the recent SEC indoor track championship and qualified for this week’s NCAA Championships.
The NCAA indoors will be held Friday and Saturday at the Randall Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.
Hayes is the only freshman on the team, which also includes Isa Phillips, Marvin Stevenson and Reggie Dardar.
The LSU men’s track team is ranked No. 8 in the nation.
Hayes has a best time of 7.02 in the 60 meters; a 21.22 in the 200 meters; and a 47.04 in the 400 meters. His best times in both the 200 meters an 400 meter were run at the SEC Cham-pionships, Held Feb. 23-25 at the University of Kentucky.

n The Abraham Baldwin College men’s basketball team fell in finals of the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association tournament finals on Saturday, losing to Georgia Perimeter 94-79.
Former Packer John Michael Hall had 12 points in the game.
ABAC was ranked No. 9 in the nation.
The Stallions had advanced to the finals with a 103-85 victory over Coastal Georgia on Friday.
n Former Packer Thomas Tripp is 1-1 with a 7.46 ERA for the Valdosta State University baseball team.
In five starts, Tripp has walked 14 and struck out 18.
Teammate Sherard Reynolds, also a former Packer, is 2-for-8 and has scored five runs for the Blazers.
Valdosta State, now 12-11, will play at Flagler at 6 tonight.
n Aaron Eubanks is 0-1, but with a 3.18 ERA for the 11-7 Georgia Southern baseball team. In 5.2 innings, Eubanks has walked four and struck out nine.Will Southwell is 2-for-7 for the Eagles.
n The Darton College women’s basketball team, which includes former Lady Packer Dorothy Strong, fell in the conference tournament finals, losing to Georgia Perimeter 75-60.
n Freshman Ashley Stafford had six points and five rebounds when Columbus State was defeated 50-43 by Clayton State in the Peach Belt Conference championship game.
n The Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team was eliminated in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament last Friday, falling 55-52 to Elizabeth City State University.
The Lady Golden Bulls, coached for Colquitt County Sports Hall of Famer Vanessa Taylor, finish 16-14.
n Higher Ground will hold a girls softball hitting clinic on Saturday and Sunday in Tifton.
The clinic will feature Dionna Harris, the leading hitter on the 1996 USA Gold Medal Olympic softball team, and will be held at the Tift County High softball field. Saturday sessions are scheduled for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m.
