Jefferson “J.C.” Carr Sr.

MOULTRIE — Jefferson “J.C.” Carr Sr., 80, of Moultrie died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Magnolia Manor South Nursing Center.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 11, at Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. John W. Greene Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Schley Cemetery with Corey Haynes, Dexter Haynes, Kenneth Seay Jr., Gregory Bell and Leroy Little serving as pallbearers. The deacons of Schley Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

He was born April 23, 1927, in Moultrie, to the late Anderson Carr and the late Verna Mae Brown Carr. He was a supervisor with Riverside Manufacturing for more than 32 years. He was a member of Bethlehem Schley Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Carr of Moultrie; seven sons, Warren Carr, Larry Carr, Marcus Carr, Patrick Pridgen and wife Sharron and Rufus Haynes and wife Tracey, all of Moultrie, and Jefferson Carr Jr. of Lindenwold, N.J., and Gregory Carr of Camden, N.J.; seven daughters, Linda Onyenaka of Camden, N.J., Catherine Ollver of Atco, N.J., Cheryl Little and husband Leroy of Savannah, Ga., and Gwen Jacob, Carol Haynes, Alma Smith and Annie Seay, all of Moultrie; two brothers, Elbert Carr Sr. and wife Jewell of Moultrie and John Henry Carr of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sisters, Hattie L. Holton of Moultrie and Mary Francis Patterson and husband William of Atlanta, Ga.; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The family will receive family and friends at 1224 12th St. N.W.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 10, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Luke Strong and Son Mortuary Chapel.

Bobby Tatum

MOULTRIE — Bobby Tatum, 64, of Pelham, died Friday June 8, 2007, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at Cobb Funeral Chapel with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is today, June 9, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Cobb Funeral Chapel.

Cobb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.



Rev. James Aaron Sullivan

MOULTRIE — The Rev. James Aaron Sullivan, 86, of Moultrie died Thursday, June 7, 2007, at his residence at Park Regency in Moultrie.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 11, at the chapel of Archie Tanner Funeral Home in Starke, Fla., with the Rev. James Cowart officiating. Burial will follow in Crosby Lake Cemetery.

Born April 15, 1921, in Lafayette County, Fla., he was the son of the late William Henry and Clyde Miller Sullivan. He was a long-time citizen of Starke, Fla., and his early years were spent in Mayo, Fla., where he was educated and farmed until he entered the United States Army in 1942. He served while storming the Normandy beaches on D-Day and later participated in the Battle of the Bulge, Moselle River Crossing and other battles throughout France, Belgium and Germany before his discharge in December 1945. He earned many medals including the Silver Star, POW and Purple Heart. He married Linnie Marie Godwin in 1949. He was retired from Hercules Powder Company and the University of Florida. He was an ordained minister of the Baptist faith and served many congregations in the north Florida area. His last days were spent leading devotions at Park Regency and ministering to his fellow residents. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, who also was a loyal Atlanta Braves fan. He was a member of the 90th Infantry Division Reunion and a member of Northside Baptist Church.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Linnie Marie Godwin Sullivan; a grandson, Randall Aaron Hardee; sisters, Marie Sullivan and Olethia “Billie” Jackson; and a brother, Wallace Norman “Plug” Sullivan.

Survivors include daughters, Carolyn Hardee and husband Terry of Keystone Heights, Fla., and Sandy Sherrill and husband Ken of Lake Park, Ga.; a son, Marcy Sullivan and wife Terri of Moultrie; grandchildren, Mark Hardee of Starke, Fla., Jason Alvarez and wife Brandi of St. Simon’s, Ga., Timothy Hardee and wife Amy of Bartow, Fla., Summer Tillman and husband Derrick of Moultrie and Jessica Sullivan of Lake Park, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Tucker Hardee, McLean Hardee and Magdalene Alvarez; a brother, Tom Sullivan and wife Marie of Starke, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 10, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

D Quillian Harris Jr.

MCRAE, Ga. — D Quillian Harris Jr., 87, of McRae, Ga., died Thursday, June 7, 2007.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at McRae United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Blalock, Bobby Dixon and Gordon B. Dukes Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the family lot at Pitts Cemetery in Pitts, Ga.

He was born April 24, 1920, in Charlotte, N.C., the son of the late D Quillian Harris Sr. and Esther Johnson Harris. He graduated from Pitts High School in 1937, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and in 1942 from the University of Georgia. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and joined the United States Marine Corps before serving in the United States Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945.

He moved to McRae, Ga., in 1946 and served as Telfair County Agricultural Extension Agent from 1945 until 1954, when he accepted a position in marketing with Coker’s Pedigreed Seed Company in Hartsville, S.C. He gained promotion to regional sales manager and agronomist of the Southeastern United States, working principally with colleges and universities. He retired in 1983.

He was past director and past president of the Georgia Seedman’s Association. He was awarded Lifetime Honorable Membership to the Georgia Seedman’s Association in 1986. He served as executive director of the Telfair County Chamber of Commerce from 1989-1994. He was named Telfair County Citizen of the Year in 1994.

He was a member of McRae United Methodist Church, where he was on the administrative board and taught Sunday school for many years. He was a member of the McRae Lions Club and was a Mason.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Eunice Calhoun Harris, formerly of Baxley, Ga.; three sons, Dr. D Quillian “Duke” Harris III and wife Jennifer of Moultrie, Calhoun Harris and wife Theresa of Jacksonville, Fla., and Dr. W. Lester Harris and wife Reneé of St. Mary’s Ga.; a daughter, Dorothy Hightower and husband John of Roswell, Ga.; and five granddaughters and two grandsons.

Visitation will be today, June 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Vaughn Funeral Home in McRae, Ga.

Mary Alice Irvin Thomas

MOULTRIE — Mary Alice Irvin Thomas, 68, of Moultrie died Thursday, June 8, 2007, at Brownwood Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007, at Bailey Chapel Cemetery in Doerun. Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.

She was born in Richland Stewart County, Ga., to the late Charlie Irvin Sr. and the late Irene Brown Collins. She retired as an insurance agent and was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cicero Thomas; and two brothers, Larry Smith and Barry Smith.

Survivors include her son, Philemon Irvin and wife Linda of Moultrie; a sister, Marjorie Crews and husband Abe of Moultrie; a grandson, Keri D. Gardner; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The family will receive family and friends at 1317 First Ave. N.W.
